Well if they replicate at lower temps, then I ought to be screwed because my body temp has always been lower than normal.

I agree, quality of life is much more important to than possibly shortening an illness by hours or days. Most wouldn’t even notice the impact, but it may increase infection rates as well.

I read somewhere recently that higher humidity is an inhibiting factor in the spread/growth of this virus.
Does that make any sense?

It’s not a major issue, respiratory tracts are usually cooler anyways so we’re all going to take that hit once we get a cold or the flu. I just don’t like how this new virus can gonso deep into the lower parts of the airway and lung tissue.

Does make sense. I would think the southwest US is far less susceptible. Wuhan's climate is similar to the Pacific NW and Northeast minus the heavy snowfall.

That’s pretty cool, learned something new.

The researchers found that low humidity hindered the immune response of the animals in three ways. It prevented cilia, which are hair-like structures in airways cells, from removing viral particles and mucus. It also reduced the ability of airway cells to repair damage caused by the virus in the lungs. The third mechanism involved interferons, or signaling proteins released by virus-infected cells to alert neighboring cells to the viral threat. In the low-humidity environment, this innate immune defense system failed.

It makes sense plus it helps with control of symptoms and overall comfort which reduce stress and help recovery.

China is currently testing anti-HIV medication for Ncov2019,

China is using AbbVie Inc’s HIV drugs as an ad-hoc treatment for pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus while the global search for a cure continues.

The Beijing branch of China’s National Health Commission said that a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, sold under the brand name Kaletra by AbbVie, is part of its latest treatment plan for patients infected by the virus, which has killed at least 56 people in China and sickened more than 2,000 worldwide.

From a 2004 study of Lopinavir/Ritonavir used on SARS,

In vitro antiviral activity against SARS associated coronavirus was demonstrated for lopinavir and ribavirin at concentrations of 4 micro g/ml and 50 micro g/ml, respectively, only at 48 hours. The adverse clinical outcome (ARDS or death) was significantly lower in the treatment group than in the historical controls (2.4% v 28.8%, p

Texas is a warmer climate and we have one of the highest rates of flu this year. For 2019, that is.

It would explain why colds and flu are so prevalent in winter. Aside from everyone being packed indoors together, the cold air is *much* drier and irritates your upper and lower respiratory tracts.

I believe it’s harder for a virus to live outside a host in a hot humid climate.

I am no Dr. but I remember reading an article somewhere in my life, a medical book etc.

British researcher estimates 100,000 have the virus.

The Guardian

A second study by researchers at Britain’s Lancaster University estimated that the central Chinese city of Wuhan where the outbreak began in December will alone have around 190,000 cases of infection by Feb. 4.

Hmmm...Vaping may actually be a prophylactic against the virus.

Low humidity, colder seasons cause micro-cracks, fissures in the skin, nasal cavities, oral-pharangeal linings of the mouth etc.

Provides more access for viruses to invade.

AZ ain’t hot this time of year, nor are we humid like ever except when the odd storm blows through.

Death toll up and infections up. Still don’t feel these numbers are real.

WHO is working with networks of specialists to analyze 2019-nCoV full genome sequences as they become available.
We have not received evidence that the virus has changed. We await further information from China officials.

Is this their “cure” I saw on Twitter, I hope it works but it looks like it needs additional studies that blind the healthcare personnel and the patient to the treatment protocol while randomizing patients and ruling out bias and underlying issues. If it does work it is a great target for an antibody drug. There is also the ethics of taking time to perform a legitimate study in that chaotic environment. I hope they get some solid data, the faster we find a treatment protocol the better.
