Gilead assessing potential use of Ebola drug as China virus treatment. If that drug works with this virus it means virus has receptors which puzzle pieces antagonists that match to those of ebola ? there were also other post about HIV medicine which could work with this disease. There has been targeted medicines for decades like dopamine etc. It is very intresting they are going to try these. Maybe they know something we don´t ?

Wanted to put this here for the naysayers. The most pertinent fact at this point-

The virus is doubling exponentially every 1.71 days.

So unless something changes, ie it mutates into a less virulent form, this will be a pandemic.

Not hype, simple math.

Semi-log plot of confirmed cases and deaths indicates the epidemic is in an exponential phase. Doubling time is 1.71 days (95% Confidence_interval 1.64 to 1.79) for case numbers.

Wikipedia

I still think we really need to take China's numbers with a grain of salt... the numbers could be misleading to look like they are exponential when in reality China officials realize the "cat is out of the bag" and they should start upping the official numbers.

I lean towards believing the numbers are higher than they are admitting, but that the exponential growth in cases is a distorted piece of data (particularly when looking at the number of cases being confirmed outside of Mainland China)

Makes me think , if mutations are rarely beneficial then surely we could increase the rate at which it mutates

couldnt we dose everyone with a low level of radiation in the quarantine zone , then allow the radiation to be cleaned away

or would this just have far too many variables and could also cause the risk of a super mutation

but surely the low level radiation would make the virus mutate to the point it no longer fuctioned
and the radiation is low that it wont damage us but would damage a virus ?

is that too risky , or is it a good idea in principle

Im guessing since its never really been done , guessing its not worth the risk

Radiation tends to have bad effects on the human body that wouldn't be beneficial to fighting off disease. The same DNA/RNA damage you are causing to the virus? You are also causing that to human cells. Humans would have to spend time healing from that. A virus would be hampered far less as its not truly alive to begin with.

UAE just confirmed family of 4 returned from Wuhan all have virus. Links at your search engine of pleasure.

Lots of roadblock videos, official and citizen made all over WeChat and Twitter. Most nothing spectacular. Going to work now will check in later.

Have an emergency meeting with no title today just put on my calendar last night. Wonder if related to my coworker being sent home yesterday.

Stay safe out there.

I read about the HIV meds being trialed but I had not heard about Ebola meds. Another member also posted about Chloroquine, an anti-Malarial that used for SARS, the report actually seemed promising.

This report suggests that the Ebola drug Remdesivir (RDV) being used is better than the HIV drugs Lopinavir/Ritonavir.

Here, we show that remdesivir (RDV) and IFNb have superior antiviral activity to LPV and RTV in vitro. In mice, both prophylactic and therapeutic RDV improve pulmonary function and reduce lung viral loads and severe lung pathology.

Thanks for the info, great work.

Yes we're sure not one single person died when it was 1st discovered in China either, what an ignorant thing to say.

Ignorant?

It's been well over a month since it started in China.
Still less than 10 cases in the States. No one has died, or, from what I've read, even gotten extremely sick.

So, fanning the flames of panic is what I would call ignorant, friend.

I saw flocks of crows like that all the time when I was growing up, many a lot bigger and more dense than that.

Is that really an example of the crows that everyone is now freaking out about?

Radio this morning was about the suspected case in Lawrence, KS. Not many people seem to be terribly concerned about it. The student in question has been back for right around 2 weeks at this point and just fell ill. If they have it, they're at the upper limits of the posited incubation of 14 days.

One lady called in who was planning to fly to China, Guangzhou I think. Her daughter is there and about to have a baby. So they leave soon to be there for the birth.

You are assuming the numbers are accurate. Remember they are from the chinese communist party. Not exactly the most trustworthy and honest peole.

Are you ignoring the numbers from the rest of the world?

If it was as bad as they say, wouldn't we be seeing skyrocketing numbers here, and elsewhere?

Or do you think the government is hiding those from us too?
