#BREAKING: Sources in #Iraq confirm IRGC leader Soleimani has been killed in targeted assassination near #Baghdad International Airport. If true this marks a MAJOR escalation between the US and #Iran.

An escalation - a big one. This could explain the dramatic increase in flights of C17's and Osprey's into Baghdad. It felt like that was too much hardware and transport simply to secure the GreenZone.

a bio:

Qasem Soleimani (Persian: قاسم سلیمانی‎) (11 March 1957 - 3 January 2020) was an Iranian Major general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and since 1998 commander of its Quds Force—a division primarily responsible for extraterritorial military and clandestine operations.[19]

Soleimani hailed from a humble background. He began his military career since the beginning of the Iran–Iraq War of the 1980s, during which he commanded the 41st Division. He was later involved in extraterritorial operations, providing military assistance to anti-Saddam Shia and Kurdish groups in Iraq, and later Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Palestinian territories. In 2012, Soleimani helped bolster the Syrian government, a key Iranian ally, during the Syrian Civil War. Soleimani also assisted in the command of combined Iraqi government and Shia militia forces that advanced against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in 2014–2015.[20]

According to Iraqi State TV, Soleimani was killed in an airstrike on January 3, 2020 while travelling in a convoy near Baghdad International Airport.

Iran will not take this lightly, 2020 could be the year the Iran question comes into play.

He wasn't just some field soldier, he was a Major General of the Quds.

This is serious and a massive escalation. The US did this expecting to provoke a response.

Persia is not scared to fight and this conflict has been decades in the making.

major general is the highest available rank for current Iranian commanders.

I don’t think Iran will do anything.

If they do we take out their oil refineries or attack their leadership.

I really doubt this will become a full fledged war because Iran knows it will lose, and know they were in the wrong using Iraqi surrogates against the US.

I dont think they are necessarily itching for a fight with the US.. But i will say, Iran/Russia/China having military/war games exercises just a few days ago is interesting timing... Will Russia and China go to bat for Iran if a retaliatory strike happens? Hard to say... but I will say, this would be the type of conflict to distract away from the swamp/biden/corruption thats being unmasked right now... well, until the Durham report drops...

Yeah well Iran better think long, hard and carefully about what they do instead of rushing headlong into war.

Beware though of a potential Putin move here on the chessboard. As in, he could preemptively attempt to take out those 4,000 troops being deployed, to disallow with a final "We've had enough of US meddling in the Middle East."

And that could come in the form of a low yield tactical. They've said they would if threatened, over and over. So lookout. In times like these, all eyes open. WIDE.

We've just had Putin thanking the US and stating how well he gets on with Trump.

Despite all the public rhetoric spouted for the masses to lap up do you honestly think they'll risk any sort of full on confrontation over Iran?

I wouldn't be that surprised if they are in regular contact behind the scenes informing each other of their next moves etc.

I don't think Putin is that stupid. He knows Trump won't fold like Obama did. He may support Iran but I seriously doubt he would commit any Russian troops.

There are still too many people who do not understand that it is a new world with President Trump in charge of things here.

Before striking Syria President Trump talked to Vladimir Putin 30 minutes on the phone. Last week President Trump talked to Vladimir Putin for 45 minutes on the phone.

The existence of these phone calls was revealed after the actions had been taken, because you cannot trust the news media, or as we have seen, some of the people who work around the president.

By the way, just revealed that Obama refused to take out this guy, even though military leaders and Israel asked him to.

Spot on,

Dangerous and exciting none the less.

Trump isn't in bed with the same folks Obama and Bush were.
Trump genuinely believes about America and its greatness and if you dare challenge that you will be made to prove it.
If you cross the line and Americans die, be prepared for an overwhelming response.
