The Newest Fake Meat Is Made from Thin Air
November 12th, 2019

pHood!

www.fastcompany.com...

Most plant-based meat, such as the Impossible Burger or the Beyond Burger, uses protein made from soy or peas. The newest meat alternative uses protein made from air instead, in a process that transforms CO2 into an ingredient with the same nutritional profile as the protein you find in animals.

Air Protein, a Bay Area-based startup, unveiled the first prototypes of “air-based” meat today. The technology behind it comes from an idea first explored by NASA in the 1960s, when scientists trying to figure out how to feed astronauts in space discovered that it was possible to use microorganisms to convert CO2—breathed out by astronauts—into food. Using a similar process on Earth, inside fermentation tanks, could help radically improve the environmental footprint of food.

A bad-breath-burger?
An oxygen omelette?

Weird. Thanks for sharing.

Did you say fermentation tanks?! I like this idea, alcohol out of air. 😁

That's a big no thanks from me.

Chicken. Beef. Pork. Fish. For me, thank you. No desire to eat fake meat, when the real thing is available.

I smell taxpayer money/grant funds in some crony's pocket.

Who owns this company and what connections do they have to politicians that live in the area? Where is this company based? Oh, never mind...I see it is a Bay Area start-up. That tells me a lot.

I prefer my burgers be made from thick air. Not enough protein in the thin air burgers.

Nothing but hype. It is just nutritional yeast.

I will never understand the need to recreate a product that already exists. You can literally go down to any grocery store in America and buy actual meat. If you don’t eat meat why are you constantly trying to create fake versions of something you won’t eat? It’s insanity.

Its not really "made" from air as far as I can deduce from the link-
rather micro organisms use(or sort of eat/digest)co2 and a secret blend of micro nutrients, then generate/excrete an ingredient which is 80% protein-that is the bit the want ou to eat.

Its a fancy biodigester which produces something humans can technically eat.
But not made from air-you still need these fancy micro nutrients to "feed" the bacteria/micro organisms.

If they must go down the complicated science route to make food, the lab grown meat(from actual animal cells)sounds more appealing to me,even though I am a veggie and wouldn't eat either.

I can't see this taking off-but there again I think aspartame is made from the excreta of genetically modified bacteria,so who knows.
Some folks will eat anything I guess.

Really?

It isn't that they, or at least not all, don't like the taste of real meat. Many have other reasons and you probably know them. It is just a hop from there to understanding.
