I cannot stand crap like this.

I got about a minute into the video and had to turn it off, this outrage over diversity in movies just stinks of racism, not every character can be a white straight male.

Rose was a failed character, its got sweet F.A to do with her race or the fact she is a woman it was just a character that didn't work, if she was white, that failure doesn't change. I am pretty sure that for most people a Rose Tico action figure would have been pretty low on the Christmas wish list not because she's asian but because the character just wasn't that good, Dr Aphra is a new character who is a lesbian asian and she's pretty darn popular. Its unfortunate really because I think Kelly Marie-Trand done the best she could with what she had and the character of Rose is actually fleshed out pretty well outside of the movie and she is actually quite an interesting character.

Personally I thought that Benicio del Toro's character has been the worst of the newer movies, he was just awful, again though, that's got nothing to do with him being from Puerto Rico.

These characters aren't bad because of their gender or race they're bad because they just fail a bit flat, much like how Jar-Jar or Jake Lloyd's Anakin didn't quite work out or how some felt that C-3PO was annoying in the OT. I honestly struggle to think of any kind of big fantasy franchise where there aren't a few characters that I just don't like but its got nothing to do with their gender or race. Making it about the race of the actor is both racist and lazy, there are legitimate reasons to say "Rose Tico is a bad character" without even having to mention the race of the actor.

You're preaching to the choir bud.

This would all be a non-issue if Kathleen Kennedy hadn't declared that if you don't love what Lucasfilm is doing these days it's because you're a racist, sexist loser!

The problem isn't the character is bad. The problem is YOU!

So just ask yourself again, why are you against diversity? Why are you opposed to Asian female characters in your Star Wars? Why aren't you buying more Rose Tico merch? HMM?!

I know Kathleen has said some pretty crazy stuff but I don't recall this one, you got a link with the quote.

The new characters fall a bit flat because the new story writers are more interested in making sure they check diversity boxes than they are in making sure the characters are properly fleshed out.

That's the problem.

They mistake Rose's gender and ethnic background for interesting plot points in and of themselves. It's like they think people will go to see characters just because they look like them and forget that the characters still have to be interesting and doing interesting things.

Today's stories have to preach to us about social justice on two levels: by heavy-handed plot points around those issues shoe-horned in and by checking every possible diversity box in their cast.

Actual interesting story line and plot are secondary considerations.

The first one kills interesting story line and plot most times by being jarring and the second wouldn't be an issue (Rogue 1 comes to mind here - it was both diverse and pretty interesting) if the first one wasn't already dead.

Wasn't she in the movie because she won a contest? Her acting was about on par with a random person. Disney is more concerned with optics more than quality. That's become painfully obvious...

Last two movies were incredibly corny... but somehow i still enjoy them. Im rolling my eyes the whole movie but im not disliking it. Maybe it's the music and cool effects

I honestly never really liked any of the movies. The old trilogy had some great cinematics and fantastic film scores, but as far as story goes... I couldn't get into it. I remember I would frequently be repeating the word really in my mind. Then the new trilogy came out and we had characters like Anakin and Jar-Jar. Just ruined the coldness that I saw in the original Vader. His origin was in some spunky kid who fell head over heels for a princess and then gets his feelings hurt and instead of being mature becomes a whiney brat who decides to just throw everything away and become a pawn.

The books though. They're hit or miss. I've read some really good ones.
