I just read an article that talked about how we pay more in taxes than what we actually spend on food and bills every year. I bet if people had to pay taxes every month out of pocket, most would be pissed off about it. Tell me that’s not a problem.

How do you think you don't already pay your taxes "out of pocket" every month????

I pay them out of pocket every single paycheck!!! So does just about everyone else.

So, back to Bluntone22's question...have you ever "experienced" a culture other than the US? Just a tourist visiting there there doesn't cut it. I'm talking about having been completely immersed in a culture...have you? Have you ever seen "poor"? I'm thinking you haven't.

I have lived in some of the countries that Bluetone22 mentioned, and totally agree with your assessment.

You know, I really wish that most Americans could live abroad for a year. I think they would have a very different view of America. (or at least get some foreign friends and ask them what they think)

Socialism is a big problem, just not the only problem. I think anyone on welfare or assistance of any kind should be drug tested and denied if positive. I bet half the people.on welfare would end up.working real fast.

These programs started out for a good cause and are now just abused. It needs an overhaul. I came from very poor family but was able to buy myself a house and pay it off not making much more than minimum wage.

I agree CEOs that do pretty much nothing and reap the rewards is pretty shysty, but you can always look for work elsewhere. You can even start your own buisnesses. You dont have to work for someone else, but think everyone that is working and taking care of themselves owes you is just wrong.

I mean you actually paying it instead of it being deducted. As in you keep 100% of your check until the end of the month.

It would be nice to have a link to the article you read so that readers could provide an informed response.

But socialism for corporate entities is okay? Socialism for people is bad?

This is morally reprehensible. Addiction is not a choice. Required to get treatment perhaps, but just sentencing addicts to death is evil.

Good for you, you are very lucky.

Nope. Folks on welfare have every right to a treat just like people who work. I mean, are you going to add to the cost and the burden of social programs by adding even more rules, checks, procedures and the administration thereof?

If you are homeless in Holland you get no welfare. Only people in legally rented accommodation (we have mandatory ID cards) can receive welfare. If you are homeless, you can try begging and wait your turn on a waiting list.

Why is it that people always blame the worker? I don't understand. People work plenty hard.

I suggest that a large part of that can be understood by looking at the ''Be all that you can be'' meme that pervades society, this notion that we all have within us this potential for if not greatness and wealth, at least individuality and self sufficiency.

This is prevalent. The US Army used that line for at least a decade, sing with me now, la la Be... all that you can BE,,, in the Arrrr r r me. This is screamed at us by every high school and college athlete being interviewed before the big game'' we got to give a hundred and ten percent.

Every person who has been successful at what ever always claims ''never quit, never quit' push push push...And while this is true, that this is what it takes, what is not true is that this will hold for everyone. Yet it is fed to us as if it is. It's your fault if you do not succeed.

What is true is that humans are tribal in nature. For millions of years our genetic makeup has been trained to be part of a whole, to make us work as a whole and succeed as a whole. This notion of individuals being a success is recent. This in part is do to the success of our entire species in overcoming the trials of adversity within this environment.

Don't expect the truth to be popular here on ATS. Too many people have invested too much of themselves personally and politically into the lie.

Are there social services of any kind for homeless people?

Is homelessness pervasive in your area?

The result is the American people are gouged into poverty by the pricing fixing of wages, products, and services. The evidence is right here in this graph:

Very very few people are in poverty due to a series of unfortunate event. Many are there because of choice and mindset.

We live in a country that you are free to get any job, you can move. You can get an education. You can forage.
The problem is that too many people are lazy and would rather complain.

You know that show undercover boss. I think they should do the reverse. Undercover CEO etc. Let people on the bottom rung see what it is like to be a CEO or executive. What they will find is that a lot of those people just work. That is all they do day in and day out. Many work every weekend for years on end. Many never take a vacation. many have failed marriage and bad family relations because they put work before all else. This is what many little guys don't see. They only see that hey that CEO makes $$$ = not fair.

Yeah, most people really have no idea what it takes to be successful. I mean really successful. They don't see the late nights, the personal sacrifices, etc.

Complaining about CEOs is like complaining about A list actor compensation or Pro-Athletes. There are only a few at the top who make a ton of money.

The real issue is that Fox News types have propagandized their viewers into believing words mean things totally counter to their dictionary definitions..

Well and they fabricate fake movements that no one considers themselves a part of..

Communism, socialism , capitalism , globalism, unions, liberal, conservative, progressive , global elites, leftists, and many many more.. I would bet money not one American conservative can give even close to the dictionary definition of all those VERY basic terms..

The same as with the red scare back in the 50samd 60s...

They trained Americans that when they used certain command words the sheeple would inherently have a negative reaction and stop listening..

It shouldn’t work on a toddler, but it works over and over again with conservatives..

respond because not everyone CAN move... People have families and moving is expensive. Not to mention uprooting kids from schools and friends they know.

I remember flying out of O'Hare years ago and viewing the slums of poverty beneath our flight path. There was a rather snooty couple over the isle and their conversation took to the poverty below. It went something like'' I just don't know how people can live like that'' with the reply '' I know, why don't they just move'''

That was 20 years ago and I still remember how obtuse those two were.

People have long moved for opportunity. If you choose not to move, it is a personal decision. People pack up their families and move all the time. Some people move across the country with a bus ticket and nothing but lint in their pocket.

I don’t think the majority of extremely successful people are self made...

I agree with most self made mega successful people, but that is assuming the vast majority of the wealthy and powerful did not just inherit their wealth and have never done a day of actual labor in their lives..

I bet I can find some stats...

For example, do you think Trump has ever changed a tire, or driven a nail??

Hell no..

He was born into millions, his daddy gave him more millions and an already successful company at 18 or 21.. I forget..

Who couldn’t be successful under those conditions..
But it is irrelevant..

The entire system wasn't made by trump or the right.
It was build over the last 75 years with both democrats and republicans in charge of all three houses.
But hey, keep bitching about republicans, at least they can sleep at night knowing they didn't write the Jim Crow laws.

Yes, some people are born on third base. However, a lot of very successful people are first generation wealthy.

The sacrifices, risks, and hard work to be successful cannot be understated. Even with all that, some people still fail.

We are the richest country on earth. Poor people in our country have access to food, clothes, housing, etc. We have so much food in this country that the big problem is that people are eating too much. You want to get rid of the economic system that lifted our entire society up, created all this technological advancement and wealth in order to adopt the failed economic policy that makes countries poorer. The policy that makes people wait in line for bread and there's never enough to feed the people. In the US you can buy bread for a dollar or two, the equivalent of a quarter of an hour of work at most. In many other countries people are starving to death. If you really think poor Americans are worse off than the citizens of most countries, you dont know much about the rest of the world. Hate to use the word privilege but thats basically it.
