BUNDESRAT WANTS TO BETTER PROTECT EU SYMBOLS

Story URL (in German, as of 20 September)

Germany's Bundesrat has proposed a law allowing punishment of up to three year's imprisonment for publicly disrespecting the EU flag or the EU hymn.

The proposed legislation must now go to the Bundestag for a vote to become law.

Cheers

Um. It's only a proposal. A worrying proposal.

Soon the German flag will be relegated. The EU flag is being elevated to that of a nation-state.

Here's a translation of the first para from the article.

The Federal Council wants to better protect the European symbols such as the flag and the anthem from slurs. In a bill passed on Friday, the State Chamber proposes a new offense, which provides for the contempt of the European flag or anthem up to three years imprisonment or a fine. So far, the Criminal Code protects only symbols of foreign states and the Federal Republic of Germany against denigration.

Yet another hit to democracy.

Totally at odds to the definition and actual purpose of the European Union.

Yeah, for my part, I liked the EU better when it was a purely economic arrangement. The path the Union is now on does not appear sound.

paraphi, I wonder what the backstory here is. Have there been a bunch of EU flag-burnings in Germany? What has happened to trigger the proposal of this legislation?

Sounds like an effort to curb growing dissent against the EU by nation state citizens.

Hard to protest being an EU member if you can't disrespect it's flag or anthem.

They probably don’t want their citizens getting any ideas about freedom from the EU like their English counterparts. The world order must be protected.

And here I was thinking it would be nice to burn the EU flags flying in front of the British parliament. Certainly reinforces the idea that they need to get out now.

A come on you guys...

You have to be close neighbors with 'm to understand that they have silently been envious of surrounding countries and their monarchies.

Their own anthem was outlawed after the war (after some discussion the were allowed to keep the third anthem or something like that). They have this strict law with national symbols etc

Can you blame a country for wanting to have some national pride? Obviously it's a sensitive subject with the history we have but I think it is understandable that they would stict up a little louder for EU pride..

Peace
