O'Donnell might be able to skate on defamation if his source is real. If he just made up the story, then I don't see how you can argue that he didn't libel Trump. The gray area comes in to play if his "source" is some anonymous person on 4chan, or something of that ilk.

In that case, I would think the fraud and false statement about the source being "close to" the bank would be what gets O'Donnell in trouble. That would probably be easier to prove though than that there is no source. Especially if it was just posted randomly on the net and O'Donnell sourced it. I'm sure O'Donnell would "protect" his source and refuse to name the source.

It's taught many of us here to be vigilant when we hear something, sadly much of the masses looks at their Twitter feed and strikes it as fact the second they read it so long as it fits their world view. Only if it challenges it will they follow up.
