The Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he has accumulated evidence that the United States were planning to assassinate him. This allegation has been dismissed as "wild" by the United State's government. "We have enough evidence ... If anything happens to me, the person responsible will be the president of the United States," This is what Huge Chavez told reporters in New Delhi on Sunday. There have been several exchanges of accusations between the left-wing Chavez and U.S officials in recent weeks, questioning the relationship between Washington and one of its top oil suppliers. On February 20th, Chavez claimed the U.S was plotting to kill him, his foreign minister said three days later that U.S accusations against Chavez were a sign of an impending attack.

Venezuela's relations with the United States have been strained since leftist Chavez was elected in 1998. He has bolstered ties with anti-U.S. countries such as Cuba and alleged Washington was involved in a failed coup against him in 2002.

Many analysts see the rhetoric aimed at domestic political audiences and do not believe it heralds any imminent diplomatic or commercial rift. Although Chavez is exploring new oil markets like China, U.S. oil companies continue to negotiate major investments in Venezuela.

On Friday, Chavez said his country would not stop supplying oil to the United States unless "the U.S. government gets a little bit crazy and tries to hurt us".

This could be the beginning of another political fall-out. If anything does happen to Chavez there will be a huge uproar against the U.S. I can imagine that if the U.S did intend to assassinate Chavez they will be thinking twice now as it could stand to be a very bad move.

This is what I disagree about the new ATSNN points system. I don't see why people are voting this as 'no'.

I think the voting system works actually. Even if a story is voted no, it does get moved to a forum and is still accessible. And if a story is newsworthy enouth, a mod will move it to ATSNN right away.

However, I do agree with you that some people seem hell bent on voting no for a story based on their political or moral ideas, which is wrong. Deny Ignorance, Don't be biased people, or we might as well watch CNN or FOX NEWS instead of getting our news here.

I did! I've heard this talk before so I'm not surprised that Chavez says he has proof to back up his allegations.

Best way for him to stay alive is to make a lot of noise. If anything happens to him then, even the diehards will have to start questioning.

As Dirk says...black gold...Texas tea.

I agree, my first thought is that Chavez try to deter such an eventuality by doing a pre-emptive (and perhaps not substantiated) accusation as to make the usa government the prime suspect on the odd change that he might find the same fate as that Lebanese guy. Its a bit paranoid, but given the current atmosphere, not entirely unthinkable...

If Chavez finds an untimely end, will there be some Colombian paramillitary to be the fallguy and will it enter the press as "VENEZUELA: Chavez killed over drugsdeal by rival drugskartel" ?

The best thing for Chavez to do would be to SHOW THE PROOF. Chavez reminds me of some of the goofballs that come on here claiming to see UFO's everyday and yet they don't have a single pic to show it.

Has anyone considered that Chavez is really a shape-shifting Chupacabra from Planet X who came to Earth during the Philadelphia Experiment only later to become "badgeman" behind the fence on the grassy knoll?? Sounds like the Greys are also involved in this one... LOL

I agree with the idea that Chavez can still be rubbed out. We'd probably have a merc or a Columbian do the job and report it as a Columbian hit against FARC officials which caught Chavez in the line of fire because he was dealing with the FARC terrorists at that time.
Nobody will believe it except Americans, but thats OK because Americans are the only ones that need to be decieved. Obviously our government thinks the rest of the world can just choke on it when they are unhappy with us, and a large part of our population seconds that motion.

Chavez knows that many Venezuelans don't want him to be in power because he is the spitting image of the communist castro. Chavez himself said he will be in power for 9 years to change things in Venezuela for the "revolution", fidel said when he started the same "revolution" in Cuba, that he would be in power for 10 years...he never gave power back to the people....

Chavez is doing everything that fidel castro did, he promised things to people, even made people believe he was giving them land...at the end it was all a lie...Chavez proclaims that castro is his mentor and a moral image that Venezuela must follow.... His own statements says the goals he has for Venezuela...

Chavez knows that with or without the help of the US, there are millions of people who want him out because they know that Chavez is a die-hard communist like castro, and quite a few might try killing him... Chavez is rattling the chains of the international community as he tries to play the victim.

BTW, i have not voted for this story, but the format is wrong...stories of mine have not been accepted only because of the space the original poster on this thread is using himself in the introduction line, that might be one of the reasons someone has voted against this story.

Here we go again. Mauddib is here to explain how unpopular this twice elected and once restored (from coup) leader is among his own people. Surely if Chavez is killed it will be by a Venezuelan acting alone, right Mauddib?
Five nations in South America have gone socialist on us now. We're getting way beyond suspension of disbelief on the "lone dictator" theory. US policy in the region has become a dismal failure and Latin America is voting in liberals who will move away from the USA, strengthen local trading blocks, and improve relations overseas as an alternative to being America's punk.
Perhaps if we'd actually practiced the good neighbor policy instead of continuing the Roosevelt Collary to Monroe Doctrine under the guise of playing defense in the Cold War, perhaps we wouldn't have this problem.

Yes, Muaddib, since when are you the official collective conscious of the average Venozuelan to speak on their behalve? I believe they have spoken for themselves in a process called democracy....just like you guys voted Bush.

We may or may not like this things for are own reasons, but would you suggest the Venezuelan elections were rigged ? lacking the Diebold factor ?

Do you believe in democracy anyway? or only democracy for americans ?

IMO - Chavez is doing the right thing by speaking out publicly. Abuse only works when the victims stay silent. ...Plus, if he turns up dead, everyone will know where to look for the perp.

As someone who has seen the documentary "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" about Mr. Chavez and the Coupe that was arranged by the US and carried out by top military officials in Mr. Chavezs own military, I would have to say he is living proof of a conspiracy, a global conspiracy... It disgusted me to see the propaganda being shown on CNN and other news stations about the status of Venezuela... after Mr. Chavez was taken prisoner by his own military and a puppet was put in place, loyal Chavez Supporters in the military around the palace took the palace over again and demanded the safe return of President Chavez, the puppet fled through a secret exit all the while the US government said "Huh? .. Oh .. Uh .. Nothings wrong.." "It's ALL under Control" .. meanwhile the total opposite of that is the truth... Why? .. because the streets were fighting back against the government... the streets wanted something and they got it... simple... it's just a good thing what they wanted was a person .. imagine the power if they wanted something like, ... say... freedom.

Why do i know what Venezuelans have to say?....because many of them come to south Florida to do business, and they are not rich like some of you would like to make it sound....most of these people earn more or less what most of you in here make.... They have their own small businesses...omg....they have their own small businesses...they must be evil Republicans....

In Venezuela they had demonstrations against Chavez with around 2 million Venezuelans calling for Chavez resignation...

If the US doesn't want Chavez in power...have any of you though that it is perhaps because they don't want another Cuban missile crises, or something similar in their hands?....nooo...it has to be because the US is evil... Well, tell you what, since you all seem to like what is happening in Venezuela....go live over there for a couple of years, then come back and tell us how it is like over there now...

Wait there a second....are you saying that this "Revolucion" is being done by liberals?..... so, are you saying that liberals are communists in disguise?... Because "Revolucion" is linked with the Marxist Leninist ideology.... the same "Revolucion" that happened in Cuba...the same "People's Revolution" that happened in Russia and made the country communist...
