An act so courageous and pure, they're our greatest heroes hundreds of years later.

Anyone who used slaves is no " Hero "

If you actually look at history you will see that Every Country and Every group of people had and used slaves at some point.

Maybe.

But who is calling them " Hero's "

Its called...survival of the fittest. Man has a propensity to conquer and survive. Its primitive in its roots but as we evolved it became more sophisticated.a reply to: Iconic

If you want to play that game, why not go back further?
Anyone who, several hundreds of years ago, invaded, occupied and took over lands which were not their own is no "Hero". So basically, the nation is built on mass murder, slavery and grand theft?

Oh look, now everybody's playing too...

What would you call it if some country wiped out US citizens with bio chem, then took it over when the virus died out?
Remember the small pox infected blankets?

I like this game!!

Oh, I remember alright.

"Heroes" indeed...

I'm not sure that's an excuse for anything.

In the same vein, you could also say "if you actually look at history you'll see that every country and every group of people has had murderers at some point" or the like.

The point being that we run Southern slave owners down as if slavery were a unique and horrible thing to them when it really wasn't. It's an evil of the human condition that persists across the face of the world even today, but you never hear about it for some reason, not like you hear about it being visited upon the sons and daughters of the American south.

Slavery has been around for a very long time and it still is today . you need to put your history in perspective , was it wrong ? yes . was it fixed ? yes

Because slavery has been around for aeons still doesn't mean some of Americas " Founders " had to use slaves.

They chose to.

Times change. You cant judge the past by today's standards. That would condemn each and every one of us one way or another. Cocaine used to be used to treat toothaches. By today's standards anyone with a sore tooth could end up in jail with a felony. In times of great depression people sold their children because they couldn't afford to feed them and selling them was better than watching them starve to death. All sorts of ritual disfigurement and molestation occurred all throughout history. It was the practice at the time. You cant judge them by today's standards.

Prior to 1655 there were no slaves in this country. There were indentured servants many of whom entered into those agreements willingly. In exchange for 7 or 8 years of servitude a person was granted freedom and a plot of land to call their own. If you really want to condemn people for slavery by today's standards I suggest you look at many African and middle eastern nations. They still practice slavery in all its original heinous glory to this day.
