there should be a law preventing politicians from holding assets in offshore firms, companies etc if they already operate within the UK , you shouldnt be allowed to circumvent the tax process in any way

if we the citizens cant then how come politicians can

it's as bad as registration of ships in foreing countries with relaxed employment laws

You may think otherwise, but a politician is subject to the same laws as you - can you quantify what he has done that you cannot?

by hiding your money in offshore accounts

that should be a law every where

But I'm sorry, regardless of what JRM is or isn't (I find him intelligent and witty personally, but think some of his values belong to another era that I don't want to see resurrected), how do you know he is hiding his personal money? Unremunerated means he doesn't get paid, and more to the point, how does that equate to profiting from the suffering of others?

It's easy enough to make a comment, would be better if you could back it up.

You know that offshore accounts are perfectly legal, right?

Contrary to popular belief you still pay tax on them and have to declare them on your tax self assessment form. Failure to do so is an offence. However high earners can benefit from tax advantages in some jurisdictions because of how tax is taken around interest rates. Offshore accounts will tax before interest is paid while UK accounts (over the tax free savings threshold) remove tax from the interest as well.

They have the advantage of allowing you to save in a different currency (in case the pound drops in value). This is also useful if you work overseas and receive some of your wages in a different currency as you don't have to deal with exchange rates for savings.

Interest rates are typically better in offshore accounts.

There is nothing stopping anyone from opening one. Some have very high fees, but others are as low as a pound to open.

ok , well surely people in government who influence the market , shouldnt be able to use their personal wealth to make money from the changing market , that they have influenced by politics

brexit will undoubtedly cause suffering to many people in the UK at the bottom of the barrel

and JRM is meant to make some crazy amount of money from brexit for this reason alone

Did you actually read the article? The only contributors were 2 of the most ardent remainers out there. The article only had one side of the accusation and no actual research into how JRM would actually benefit, just that a company he is involved with will make money. To paraphrase one of the comments attached, it looks like it was written by a 14 year old who can't research.

It does say he's unremunerated, that is unpaid. Regardless, the point being was that is he doing anything wrong and avoiding tax on UK earnings and activities? I suspect not. The original throw-away comment suggested he was avoiding taxes.

He is one of the better tories. He seems to understand a lot of the country.
He even has the same.
A lot of our politicians all came from the same sort of priviliged background, went to the same schools, college's and the same university Eton.
