In 2003, a tree branch fell on a power line in Ohio and, instantly, over 50 million people in the United States and Canada were hit with cascading blackouts. A tree branch.

I think that is sensationalism.
Is true that many would die but no where near 90%. They are over optimistic in thinking we Americans are weak and dependent on them.
How it would play out:
Power would be knocked out for months in many places but not everwhere. Sick and those dependent on continual medical treatment would be relocated to places with power. Able bodied would stay in places where power is knocked out
Food chain disruptions for sure but farmers can farm without constant electrical power. Rural areas would less likely be hit by EMP, so power rerouting keeps food supply working and a subsistence level.
Yeah would be a pain but I would surmise 80%+ survival rate instead of 90% fatality rate
