Residence of the Hampton Roads area got shaken today by a loud boom.
news report

Navy said an F-18 was up at the time, but didn't confirm it caused it.
Anybody on here that could shed light on this?

I heard it from Newport News. I figured it was just a storm coming but I checked outside and the sky was clear!

Military jets in the sky here are as common as clouds. They are prohibited from going supersonic over residential areas. Should never be a sonic boom. I have never heard one but I hear the jets all day every day. Four or five at a time.

At what point was the sky clear yesterday?
It was a cloudy all day long. Chilly and cloudy.
I am in Hampton. Closer to VB than you if you are in NPN .

Almost certainly a sonic boom.

Sonic booms carry hundreds of miles, if not more. The farthest recorded effects from a sonic boom were over a thousand miles.

Sonic booms are not uncommon on the east coast. Between the alert aircraft, and the all the test and combat coded aircraft stationed there, they happen more than they should. No reason to cover for anything.

Sonic boom, most likely from Navy aircraft flying in the area, but they are still trying to confirm who owned the aircraft.

I am convincing myself that they can also come from space.

Now, there are countless accounts of Aurora Borealis creating “crackling” noises like (assuming) what we all know from the movies and Tesla coils (Alive! ALIVE!!!). Heard stories of it growing up here.

So “booms” and “lightning cracks” and maybe even”sky trumpets” might all come from where Auroral activity comes from.

Maybe. But it is only an idea.

When "science" says "What the hell?" the fun starts.
www.adn.com...

But I don't think Virginia gets much auroral activity. Fast jets though...
