In all honesty, everything crumbles at some point or another, only so much can be done to keep something around. Perhaps as far as the universe is concerned, it's this building's time. Or far past it's time by many hundred of years. At one point, it wasn't considered worth a damn and was a breath from being demolished anyway.
For further perspective, there's dilapidated ruins of castles and forts elsewhere in Europe that were substantially more important than this church ever was, yet no one seems to express the same sympathy for them existing in crumbled heaps on the ground. Their time came, too.

What's important is no one was hurt. That far outweighs any romanticization of a building.

One part of the building is still actually aflame, although most of the fire is out. I think this is the area near where the spire was located.

Or an accident at a renovation site.
Fires from debris during restoration is a big problem. Also old insulation is being exposed and that is very flamable.
And some tools may be heat producing.
why jump to conclusions of terrorists first when accident is more likely.

its way too early to make any assumptions about anything. Arson or accident

No one knows what happened yet. Could be an accident.
I hope its just an accident and not some asshole with a grudge to settle.

True.

So tragic.

One thing to think about is renovations makes it much easier for someone to get in there and do arson without much notice or physical security.

Reports that onlookers in Paris are singing and also praying.

There are firefighters and others who went in to try to save the artwork according to the news and the island is being evacuated as well.

Mass, there, would've been really something. You're fortunate to have experienced that.

Hmmn......

Multiple French churches vandalized

There were almost 50 attacks and acts of vandalism against religious sites in France documented in the month of February, according to Observatory on Intolerance

It's also worth noting for the religious types, it's also possible letting it burn is a deity's way of making displeasure known with Catholic opulence on display in their buildings.

Just a thought to consider, that maybe even the omnipotent might have grandeur limits.

Something I did not know is that the building is owned by the State, not the church, but all costs come from the church.

They have been having problems raising the money to renovate and money has been coming in from American donors to help keep renovations going. France itself does not contribute to preserving the seventy plus churches it took ownership of in 1905. I can only imagine how much the State takes in from tourists there to see those buildings, so it strikes me as odd.

About a half hour ago one of the stations reported a church spokesperson said the interior wooden structure is burning and lost. They are now saying it's spreading to the towers.

The stained glass in the round window, facing, seems to have been shattered out of the window frames, or perhaps the leading melted.

The Paris prosecutor’s office has started inquiry into the blaze — although, it was unclear if the fire was deliberately set.

I would assume that there would be an investigation of a fire of this scale on an historic landmark as a matter of course.
