Just breaking... Not much out there yet. Hope no one gets hurt and the brave firefighters can put it down ASAP.

A fire has broken out at the famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, firefighters say.

The cause is not yet clear, but officials say it could be linked to renovation work.

The value of Notre Dame is worth more than half the population of Earth.

Heartbreaking for me. All of that history, 856 years old. I visit every time I’m in Paris.

I’m not Catholic, but we have friends that are. The first time I visited Norte Dame, my wife and I lit a candle for our friends, the next time we visited our friends had overcome adversity and traveled with us as man and wife.

I hope this is an accident. My first thought was if it not an accident, it would be a good way to start a war.

The spire just fell. It's like watching the world trade center fall again.

And ironically the image behind the page is the WTC

Probably some anti-Christian group. France should have more street-cams, like we have in America.

Seems to be a roof fire , good news in the scale of things but also more likely it's an accident associated with the renovation work rather than a malicious act.

Watching the live stream it looks pretty devastating , sad day.

The Spire has collapsed and it's looking like the Church will be lost. How horrible. Over 800 years of History.

It started in the area with the scaffolding. They were doing work up around the spire and that is where the fire is.
Electrical? Poorly disposed cigarette?

Almost fifty in the month of March, and they continued on into April.

Logically there must be a common denominator?

Newsweek says that "OFFICIALS DON’T KNOW WHY."

Dont know? OR Cant say?

WTF!!!!!!???, Noooooooo!

Omg, I can't believe this.

All I can say is that it had better not be muslims. I'd rather Pierre accidentally plugged in the wrong switch than a terrorist attack.

This frigging sucks!

Or just won't say because it's not politically expedient.

Sad, such a landmark for that area.

Paris seems to be falling in more ways than one these days.

I just googled "arson in France"........many stories about desecration of churches for the past year by " militant secularists". The real question is it some sort of anti-Christian attack by Islamic jihadists or is it just a secular hatred of Christianity?

Wasn't there a thread the other day about a bunch of churchs being burned?

I thought that was in france too.

They know why.

Look no further than the hundreds of historical edifices and statues destroyed by one certain ideology.

This is a very serious fire. The entire roof level seems to be burned out at this point. There would undoubtedly be valuables stored in the attic.

I wonder if there had been work going on on the roof. I do see scaffolding on the building. There was another old building set on fire by workmen doing leadwork on the roof. I can't remember the building at the moment.

Link to France24 coverage (in English).
