I'm pretty sure they covered their backsides by saying they were investigating the campaign and not Trump himself, which makes your claim that they needed evidence that "Trump was a Russian asset" a bit of a strawman.

The guilty parties are now pivoting to say that they were suspicious that Russia was trying to spy on the Trump campaign, and they were attempting to find out who it was.

The problem with that is no one told the Trump campaign they were being spied upon potentially. Which means this excuse is a lie also.

Exactly - if that was actually the case and they had a counterintelligence operation active to supposedly weed out unwanted Russian influence in the Trump campaign, I think it might have been helpful to let the Trump campaign know something was going on. They didnt do that, so that claim falls flat on its face.

Bear in mind that could be in reverse PJ, i.e. sequence of a 90 day plan could be [-90], [-60], [-45], [-30], Go LIVE!
This would match NASA "T minus" countdowns.

In this case:
[-45] would be April 25th (5x5)... Wednesday after Easter.
[-30] would be Friday May 10th,
[0] would be Sunday June 9th.

The Trump campaign was being spied upon, but evidence doesn't point to Russia.... it points to the Obama Administration.
