Green Dragon Auroras Appear Over Iceland Puzzle Scientists

You certainly can label this a "wow moment." I've always been fascinated with auroras because of their sheer beauty, so it's no surprise that I was blown away with NASA's astronomy picture of the day, that was posted on February 18. An aurora that appeared over Iceland last week, looks like "Maleficent's dragon incarnation from Disney's Sleeping Beauty."

In addition to the dragon shaped aurora, there was also one that looked like a rising phoenix dragon, which was photographed on the same night.


Scientists were puzzled by the appearance of these auroras, because there has been no unusual solar activity in the month of February, to create this "fire breathing" light show.

While auroras themselves are not an unusual sight, NASA noted that this Icelandic dragon (which also resembles evil queen Maleficent's dragon incarnation from Disney's "Sleeping Beauty") appeared at an unexpected time. "No sunspots have appeared on the Sun so far in February, making the multiple days of picturesque auroral activity this month somewhat surprising," the editors of NASA's astronomy picture of the day blog wrote on Feb. 18.

Fascinating! So, if there was no noticeable solar activity in February, it begs the question: what or who is projecting an electron beam into the atmosphere to create this effect?

Well this is an ad campaign for the mother of dragons. It's for the last of Game of Thrones.

the person standing there so well composed makes me think it was a bit of fakery.
basically they took a bunch of pics,and a few look like animals.

im a photographer, and another photographer told me i indulged too much in taking so many pics. in the 80s, you only had film, which costs crazy cash to buy and process. but with digital, even street scenes, i take 10 pics minimum, choose the best.

I was in Iceland 2 years ago. Was lucky enough to see the whole sky full of color. Just like second picture but it filled the night sky. The greatest moment of my life. Lasted around 2 hrs. We sat in the snow drinking Gull beer and brennevin in total awe of the heavens.

Looks like Jormungand, the world serpent getting ready to rumble( literally according to his story) for the final days of Ragnorak when him an Thor will clash so violently it shakes and cracks the tree.


It going to make Jesus and Satan battle look like a bunch of sissie little girls fighting over a boy.

Gorgeous!!!!! I have seen this all over facebook and it's just amazing!

Ancient people drawing pictures on cave walls from what crazy auroras they saw in the sky tht could have also led to their peoples extinction or something along those lines. Either way run for the hills!
