A distinguished Harvard University professor is not backing down from his claims that a piece of extraterrestrial spacecraft technology may be flying past the orbit of Jupiter at this moment.

Avi Loeb, one of the top astronomy professors in the world, boasting of decades of Ivy League professorships and hundreds of publicized works in respected astronomy publications, is remaining defiant that the space object – dubbed as “Oumuamua” – first noticed by Hawaiian astronomers in 2017 could be from another civilization.

Came across this today on a sports show, of all places, but thought I'd look it up and it wasn't some long ago, recycled story or some crap like that. This guy is really sticking to his guns it seems.

I don't have a dog in this race. I don't care either way but I thought this might make for interesting discussion. Either that or a epic argument but hopefully the former.

Reminds me of the ringmakers

A video made early last year is making the rounds this week, possibly because of recent anomalies that have been seen in Saturn’s rings or possibly because it’s a slow news week. Whatever the case, the interviewee is Norman Bergrun, a former longtime NASA and aerospace industry scientist and author of The Ringmakers of Saturn who claims there are huge spaceships in Saturn’s rings that may be becoming dangerous to Earth and the rest of the solar system.

It's always necessary to keep eyes and mind open to unexpected phenomena rather than disregarding reports because "it can't be true". That's the way scientific knowledge has surged forward [in fits and starts and detours, to be sure]. It's entirely plausible that a new observation-based candidate hypothesis might involve ETI, current or past. Equally plausible is to imagine any ETI that exists could be as detectable by us [or not] as they desire ['absence of evidence is not evidence of absence']. So far the track record is unbroken, from rainbows to lightning to volcanoes to disease and so forth -- every attempt over thousands of years to attribute an observed but non-understandable phenomenon to a non-human being has failed, refuted by the advances in human science. But as our senses sharpen, at the advancing limits of our perception, there remains a retreating borderland of ambiguity and uncertainty that still provides plenty of puzzles, thrills, and temptations to try once again to attribute the observation to that classic but consistently failed model of 'others'. There's always next time, and someday..?

"In the meantime, he's doubling down, hosting a Reddit AMA on "how the discovery of alien life in space will transform our life," and constantly emailing his "friends and colleagues" with updates on all the reporters who are speaking to him."

How will the discovery of alien life in space transform our life?

We will still have lobbyists. We will still have fiat currency. We will still have poverty. We will still have extreme wealth inequality. Education stinks. Healthcare stinks. Almost the entire population has no retirement security.

Personally, I think this is due to the overwhelming number of exoplanets that we now know, or at least hypothesize, to exist out there.

This is making the Fermi Paradox even more acutely in need of an answer, and while there are more than one solution, one is that we are not looking in the right places.

While any talk of "alien" life is stil an uncomfortable topic for discussion in many circles, the alternatives are starting to become equally uncomfortable.

That we are so unique as to be the only advanced technological civilization in the observable universe is, after all, even more sensational than any amount of possible alien activity.

Especially since there seem to be so many suitable planets where our current science would expect life to evolve.

Fact is, he can not prove that it is an alien spacecraft. It is like the Tabby star thing all over again.

Another scientist making a wild claim, getting some media attention and apparently enjoying it.

Theres a cult in the making here - one of these days some such cult will make the big time, absorb all the rest, and we will have the next major religion in the world.

Needs a prophet first though - maybe this guy.

Apparently you can go and visit the Jesuits up at Castle Gandolfo and actually see all the spacecraft going by. they do tours of this place and they talk openly of having to Ignore all the spaceships flying by.

CASTEL GANDOLFO serves as the main headquarters for the Vatican Observa- tory, one of the oldest astronomical insti- tutes in the world. It operates under the jurisdiction of the pope and the Roman Catholic Church. Since 1891, when the observatory was founded, the pope's astronomers have used it to study the night sky.

Here is the link to the Harvard page with all publications on the topic.
He says it's a spacesail leftover, that's what he takes from the acceleration and because it's apparently so thin and odd.
I couldn't argue against that and as far as I am aware of nobody has a real theory what it could be.

And it will still be dismissed...but you can have some dingbat in a murder case somehow be credible as a witness....
