Seems to be getting more air time than the Su57.

IOC was declared. There are 20 to 30, maybe as much as 40, J-20s in operational squadrons.

Wonder where they got the chine idea from?

China in the mean time has purchased 24 Sukhoi S-35s from Russia. They will probably back engineer the engines and radar (at least) if they can and make copies like they have before with other Russian equipment. Russia has supposedly signed an agreement with the communist that says they will not steal intellectual property rights of the aircraft... And here I thought Putin was smart..???????????

Since China at the moment has the unlimited financial backing and determination to do so, I'd agree with this.

Might be the VLRAAM they're working on.

Or just some rather conventional missile. Hard to make out anything.

Edit come to think of it, have we even seen the J-20 with external weapons before?

We have not.

What ever it is attached...welll..it could be a fuel tank. Could be a BVRAAM. Could be an ASM.

Whatever it is, it's big.

I thought that's the first time I had seen external stores on a J-20. But it was inevitable really. After day 3 or so of a campaign your stealth requirement steadily drops for all but some signature sensitive targets. External stores gives you more options that the confines of an internal weapon bay(s) cannot.
Zaph, I was thinking a VLRAAM, everyone seems to be rediscovering what the Phoenix offered 40 years ago.

But with a better success rate...

How many J-20s are estimated to be operational now? I don't expect they've publicized their forecast for how many they intend on producing over the next couple years?

The estimate is 30 to 50.
