yes because the chaperones could have and should have stopped that situation from escalating like it did. I know you don't feel that way so we can agree to disagree on that.

I also see you're trying your darndest to avoid putting any of the blame on the kids, the school or the chaperone. I think there's a lot of blame to pass around afyer what happened and all parties involved should share some of the blame.

Someone should really take his little drum and shove it up Phillip's ass at this point. The idiot has managed to amass a following for being a jackass, lying, and a handfull of "accomplishments" which are entirely out of his doing such as his ethnicity and age. And while we're on this topic, aren't we beyond romanticizing this nonsense the way Hollywood did 50 years ago with their BS invention of the noble savage? "But he's an 'elder'..." And? He's an old man with a big mouth who decided it would be brave to torment some children, so brave, so noble.
Let's see him pull that stunt with adults next time. Of course then the asshats would really come out of the woodwork portraying this idiot as some sort of heroic victim.

hey chaperone those guys just called me the n-word and a homophobic slur what should we do - go back and forth with them for an hour while we wait for our bus (genius) why didn't he go look for an authority figure? If four crazy guys start throwing racist slurs at my kids I would not tell them to debate them for an hour I would leave the area as soon as possible and look for a cop.

Here's why he targeted the kids---because he has tried this nonsense with his own people and ended up being escorted out of the meetings and rallies by two rather burly men of his own culture group. He's a known agitator and is banned from lots of pow-wows and dances.
He focused on the kids because the other dudes would have taken him out. He's not stupid, just eaten up with the need for attention. He's been reprimanded by elders from many tribes for his aggression with the drum. He's always wanted his 15 minutes. I guess he didn't listen when the elders told him, "Be careful in asking."
I feel sorry for the AIM people that he's duped. I suppose they're young and don't know how to use Google? No way to find out about him?
Thanks for the background.

I don't know. I'd bet it could be found on some sort of social media. What I witnessed was well before the days of social media. It was in the early '90s when Dennis Banks was living in northern KY. We were lobbying the KY legislature to pass a graves protection act. We wanted a graves protection act. He (Phillips) wanted a fight. The elders refused his request for funds and asked him to leave.
I believe he was later involved with an unaffiliated group that was asking for tribal status in KY. They were planning to buy some land and open a casino. Financed by casino owners of course. I wasn't involved but got the warnings about this group via the Indian grapevine. I can't imagine why AIM would fold him in their arms. The elders know him even if the youngsters don't.

Just to clear things up a bit. I joined the army in June 1976 a I was still considered a Vietnam veteran. The designation was mostly related to the benefits you got from serving. Not long after I joined Benefits like free school tuition morphed into a dollar matching program. Other things like VA guaranteed home loans remained unchanged, but these new recruits were no longer considered members of the Vietnam era. So, officially I'm a Vietnam veteran, even though peace with honor was declared 4 years prior.
The term has been used to describe veterans who were in the armed forces of South Vietnam, the United States armed forces, and countries allied to them, whether or not they were stationed in Vietnam during their service. However, the more common usage distinguishes between those who served "in country" and those who did not serve in Vietnam by referring to the "in country" veterans as "Vietnam veterans" and the others as "Vietnam-era veterans". The U.S. government officially refers to all as "Vietnam-era veterans"
According to the US Department of Labor, the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 (VEVRAA) states, "A Vietnam era veteran is a person who
served on active duty anywhere in the world for a period of more than 180 days, any part of which occurred between August 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975, and was discharged or released with other than a dishonorable discharge.
was discharged or released from active duty for a service connected disability if any part of such active duty was performed between August 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975.
