Yes it's a mock up airport.

If you zoom in..
It may also suggest testing detonation outward.

Thanks for posting that

...could it be an emergency airstrip with the ground cleared, flattened, and compacted?
Seems like a lot of work for nothing otherwise.

Part of the Nellis Air Force Range. Just a training ground.

They use them for inert bombing and ISR training for Creech. It teaches them what various objects will look like when they're flying live missions over other countries. If you look at Creech, there's even at least one Russian aircraft mockup right beside the runway.

Makes perfect sense

Do they copy expected targets, like they are from satellite photo's?

As best they can. A lot of these are for basic interpretation work. They'll try to get as close as possible for specific missions.

That is interesting, thanks for teaching me something new today.
The US military machine is a huge undertaking with fake landing strips carved in the land.
I don't think there is anything like that in the UK. The RAF do low flying training in the Brecon Beacons mountains in Wales, I rented a shack there for a few months once, so basic it was £10 per week and I had to hike 3 miles for my nearest water and civilisation over uneven grassland terrain.
It was fantastic watching them go past though, like a private deafening airshow.

Rainbow Canyon in Death Valley is our big public low level. It's fun to see some of the big guys fly the transition.

If I was rich and over there I'd add a tour of places like that in the US, rent a shack or camp under flightpaths, for sure.
I bet it is impressive.

Mate! I just watched the Mach Loop video, thanks for posting, that was air training porn haha!
I've never been to North Wales, maybe a summer mission, looks like open space land which nobody minds hikers camping there. Gonna do some reading up.

I'll post some of my shots later tonight. We were there in July. Multiple F-18, F-22, and two RCAF C-130 passes.

I sit near Dyess AFB a couple times a week. If conditions are right, you can hear the B-1s working the Sweetwater range. They'll call out targets, do BDA, just like it was a real mission. It's a hell of a lot of fun to listen to.

See, now you are just showing off!

...a friend's son is a trainee pilot in the RAF, he had Christmas leave and I saw him at my son's birthday party. When I was talking to him about it his eyes were clearly excited as well as his enthusiasm.
I've watched him grow up, never thought he would be an RAF pilot, really pleased for him. He also plays rugby for the RAF so gets out of drill/guard BS/whatever to go training instead.
