Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake Hits Turkey

The earthquake struck Friday at 1755 GMT, 8:55 p.m. local time, near the town of Sivrice in eastern Elazig province, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said.

The U.S. Geological Survey gave the preliminary magnitude as 6.7, with the quake affecting not only Turkey but also Syria, Georgia and Armenia.

Fortunately for us in the Cayman Islands, it appears that no tsunami was created; with parts of the country only 60 miles from the epicenter, they would have been hit by now.

I counted 27 seconds from the start to the end of the temblor, although that could have been less, because a person tends to still sense movement after it has stopped. I could definitely feel both waves, as the S wave was slower and more lateral motion. The rumble came with the first one. It's the biggest EQ we've felt in the 27 years we've lived here. No damage in Grand Cayman that I have heard of yet. I'm sure there will be some. Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman were much closer, with Cayman Brac only about 60-70 miles away from the epicenter.

You have no idea how happy I am to see you in this thread posting that update! Have a double shot for me later today, my friend. Big quakes absolutely suck.

News is saying the Caymans have roads cracked open and sewer lines broken and spewing sludge in the streets, but no reports of fatalities or structural failures so far.

I have heard that, but can't confirm, as we're staying in and out of the way; our immediate neighbors are okay, and power is still on.

I think I'll take you up on that double shot. ;o)
