Should people be allowed to smoke on a public beach?

Former smoker and beach bunny who grew up up & down the Gulf Coast in Fl here.

Smoking at beaches should be banned. There are a few smokers out there with enough discipline to leave their smokes in the car or even at home for a beach day, they aren't ALL lazy bums tossing trash everywhere. I spent plenty of days at the beach with my friends/family, with my own pack of smokes waiting for me AT HOME, and picking up as much smoker litter as I could find at the beach.

Of my friends and family that were/are smokers also, their packs never went any further than their cars. Even they didn't smoke at the beach and think it should be illegal. Some smokers are filthy pigs who just toss their butts anywhere and don't care. However, many believe the beaches are treasures that deserve a little respect and effort, and will back TF out of that bill.

It's open air. Of course it should be allowed. Cigarette butts are a different thing. I'm a cigarette smoker, but I never litter my butts. If you ask me to move, I will do that for you.

Maybe I don't want to see fake breasts. Should that be illegal at the beach? Maybe I don't want to smell your crappy cologne. Shouldn't that offensive odor be illegal? Maybe I don't like you moving all that sand to build your stupid castle. Let's ban that too.

They should get real and ban Cars in public spaces as the exhaust gasses are far more dangerous than a ciggy.

I switched to electronic cigarettes a long time ago. When I did smoke i disposed of the butts properly.
Smoking on a beach i guess would be fine if people did it in a smoking permitted area but anyone would smoke and dispose of the butts somewhere else regardless, thinking the sand will just cover up their mess.
My rules to smoking were to keep it away from people who don't like it and especially away from children.

I don't have a problem with the smoking, the trash butts are the issue with me. I have a even bigger issue with more government overreach though. So......I'm thinking no ban. Ticket those without a portable ashtray of sorts. It's littering and should be treated as such. There's a lot of marine life in the sand.

IK, R? What red-blooded straight male on this planet doesn't want to look at titties, augmented or not?

I use e-cigs. Not sure why those are banned like cigarettes. It must be a prelude to nicotine prohibition. Big pharma is more than likely lobbying heavily for a ban on nicotine. There is a lot of money to be made in nicotine cessation drugs, which have the side effects of depression and suicide.

Edit: And that's not a sense offense, that's a personal perception. Cig butts are as disgusting as taking a s# on the beach is -- nobody wants to stumble across that, regardless of excuse. Your log isn't exactly benefiting anyone, and neither is a cig butt.

Read my above. Your "point" is an excuse. I can be relaxed after crapping, but the beach is not the place to do it. I was relaxed when smoking, but the beach was NEVER the place to light up.

I did read your point. I just happen to disagree. I think in an open air environment it's not really a problem. Most smokers try to distance themselves from nonsmoker's when smoking.

People are free to move or request a smoker to move. I don't see the need for a law in this scenario.

Start handing out tickets for littering when someone improperly disposes a butt. I'm all for that.

Hitler hated smoking and smokers, by the way.

I've agreed with you 100% on the cigarette butt issue. I don't litter butts, and most of the people I know don't either. Punish the crime of littering rather than banning smoking in public.

I'm a coastie. Spend plenty of time at the beach.

I police my own butts and don't turn total evil and authoritarian when people don't.

Your link didn't say anything about e cigs or vapes that I saw.
I am a former cig smoker, that now vapes.
Hell, even going down a river in a Kayak, I always kept my butts, to throw away when I got home, so yeah, I can see ticket people that litter. Heck, make it a hefty fine. It would give beach patrol something to do.
But it is outside. People should be allowed to smoke outside.
Isn't it all they have left?

And as for vaping or e-cig, shouldn't be illegal. No litter there.
