The Golden Record

Pioneers 10 and 11, which preceded Voyager, both carried small metal plaques identifying their time and place of origin for the benefit of any other spacefarers that might find them in the distant future. With this example before them, NASA placed a more ambitious message aboard Voyager 1 and 2, a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials. The Voyager message is carried by a phonograph record, a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth.

I was reading the Youtube comments about Blind Willie Johnson's song "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground" when I discovered that NASA had included this haunting track on a record they sent out with the Voyager.
A friend and I immediately set out to make our own mix tape for aliens, because... why wouldn't you want to try this? LOL.

The original Golden Record has 27 tracks, but we limited ourselves to 19 each to celebrate 2019 and challenge ourselves by narrowing down our choices.
Here's NASA's choices in case you want to check it out!

Anyone else care to compile their own Golden Record?

My tracks-- mind you, my goal was to compile a fairly decent cross section of the human musical experience. There's no way to properly represent mankind's muse
(music) in only 19 songs, but the limitation was a fun part of the challange for me.

Here's my space mix tape, let me know what you think and let's add to our ATS Space Mix!!

Ave Maria-- Biebl Chanticleer
Petit Pays-- Cesaria Evora
Hallowed Be Thy Name-- Iron Maiden
Time-- Pink Floyd
Non Je Ne Regrette Rien-- Edith Piaf
Dazed and Confused ( Song Remains the Same ) Live-- Led Zeppelin
www.youtube.com...(This one, couldn't embed)
Odarladyp Semirtiili (Let’s Fatten the Livestock)-- Alash

Moonlight Sonata-- Beethoven
Time Will Tell-- Bob Marley
Mohammad Abdu In Concert

Bidi Bidi Bom Bom--Selena (Because sometimes we just listen to music to DANCE. And it's a love song)
What a Wonderful World--Louis Armstrong
Glenn Gould - Liszt Transcription of Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No.7 - Allegretto
Wadaiko Matsuriza - Kabuki Gomen-Jyo

Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli - Jattendrai Swing 1939 - Live
Sigur Rós - Starálfur
Shostakovich Cello Concerto No 2
Spottieottiedopaliscious-- Outkast
Bimba Dagli Occhi Pieni di Malia--Mirella Freni - Plàcido Domingo

I'll post my friend's list as soon as I get it-- he has a very different (but excellent) taste from mine in certain respects so I'm looking forward to hearing his picks.
Hope you are having a great night!

Many great cuts. I would add "Church Street Blues" as performed by Tony Rice.

I couldn't possibly choose. I'm kind of chuckling thinking about alien beings listening to all our music from Earth.

Aliens: "Those Earth beings are trippy."

Lol, it's a very funny thought to me as well... just thinking about aliens rocking out to Iron Maiden really gave me a laugh.
and I think you might be right about what extraterrestrials would conclude by learning about us through our music

Excellent thread Zos!

I would enter this piece to be put on the disc. It offers a wide rage of emotion for the aliens to understand.

Let them know we liked to rage, it was kinda our thing.

Maybe they can rage for us after we are long gone?

Man you are so right this is a rather sterile eulogy so far.

Dope choice for our mix too!

That built-in wave analyzer was cool. Soothing selection, perfect for my current state of mind.

After hearing it the first time, I was inspired to write a piece to it.
