Greetings ATS.

I am preparing a series of threads to present to our community.

In the interest of providing a pleasant reader experience by preserving continuity and aesthetic I would like to get the maximum amount of Characters into my posts.

Will someone kindly help an ATS brother out? What's the max? Your Role in this is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas to all!

most people tend to stop reading after the first post it's better to break it up into multiple threads over time

Perhaps mine will be the exception and not the rule. Who knows?

probably not, most people don't even read more than 5 sentences or check sources

To be honest, I don't remember...

I think it's around 7,500. I think...

You're usually better off breaking it up into multiple posts, chapters if you will.

But good luck with it!!!

No worries, it's good input. You've been around here longer than I, I think. I'm beginning to think the Chapters idea is the way to go.

forget the count...people aren't turned on by walls of text....so many good threads aren't read past a certain count...and that wastes all your effort.

this is not always true...but in
general...good luck.*

*I don't "Twitter"....but it's theory of limiting seems a good one

Best

The maximum character count is 7413.
I'm not joking. I write very long threads (check my profile) and I bang my head against that limit over and over again.
It used to be a round 7500 and marked as such, but some minor software tinkering had the side-effect of reducing it.
(This change was annoying when it happened, because I had some pre-written threads going right up to the old level, and they were suddenly in danger of being cut short.)

If you use the character count on Word, remember to include spaces.

Multiple posts in a single thread is best, IMHO.

I also do not remember the post count, but if you run too close to the limit, you lose any ability for anyone, including moderators, to do any editing.

7500, but remember that the tags also count, so every time you use bold or italic, for example, you are using 7 extra characters.

My main reason for asking. Hit this bumper before and had to do fancy footwork.

It was presumably intended to be 7500, but my practical experience over the last few years has been 7413 (reduced without warning, so probably unplanned).
In addition to tags, setting up links to other threads creates invisible characters which go un-noticed by most counts, so the effective limit is reduced further.

It's 7500, I just tried it.

Thank you. It DID reduce to 7413 at one stage, so the glitch must have been reversed as silently as it was introduced.

No- hold on a moment. I've just conducted an experiment.
I "quoted" an old Revelation thread (they tended to go above 10,000), pasted it into a fresh post, and then copied the text as cut down by the editing box. I then pasted this reduced text onto a new Word document- lo and behold, the character count in Word was exactly 7413.
So I stand by my story.
You can get 7500 characters on a page, perhaps.
I'm only allowed 7413, as counted by Word.

Word does not count line breaks, but they count in the text box where we write our posts, that could be the difference.

PS: I did my first test by writing "1234567890", copying it and pasting it enough times to reach the limit, without any spaces or line breaks.

OK, we seem to be heading towards the conclusion that the 7413 limit is more specific to Word documents for some reason.
I'm not sure you've hit the right reason, though. I can vouch for the fact that the difference is 87 characters, every single time- that is, my effective limit has never varied from 7413 for some years now. The number of line-breaks in a text would be variable, so they would not result in such consistency. If there is a "use of Word" penalty, it has to come from some other cause.
