WASHINGTON — The economy is doing quite well, thank you very much, and the president would naturally like to take credit. Both of them. Barely a day passes without President Trump boasting about the growing economy, claiming with a mix of hyperbole and fact that it is “booming like never before.” But former President Barack Obama finds all the Trumpian chest-thumping more than a little grating, given that the “booming” started on his watch. The economic contest between the 44th and 45th presidents went public in recent days when Mr. Obama expressed his irritation and Mr. Trump fired back. At stake are more than ordinary political bragging rights. Central to Mr. Obama’s historical legacy is the economy’s recovery after its plummet to the brink of a new Great Depression. And central to Mr. Trump’s current political standing is its further expansion.

This is a simple idea. Obama spent much of his first few years blaming Bush for any and all failures. Then, He wanted to claim all the economic success stories during the Trump presidency is because of his policies. Well, now the market it doing bad. Economy is stuttering. Uncertainty is creeping in. Is that Obama's as well, or it that all Trump?

I'd say you can't have it both ways, but I suspect we will see posts stating exactly that. Impress me dems, show some integrity. Own it.

It takes time for economic polices to kick in and actually start effecting the general economy. Also you look to see when those policies were enacted. It took AGES for congress and Trump to get their tax and economic plan passed, before that time we were still running on policies enacted by Obama and the previous congress.

Like the DOT.com boom and bust are put on the shoulders of Clinton and congress of the time and not Bush 2, even though a lot of it took place early in the Bush 2's first term.

Generally speaking there's about a 1-2 year period of momentum in the economy. Decisions made by a President will kick in about two years later.

So for the first one or two years of Trump, it is basically Obama's economy. After that, we start to see the trickling in effect from the new guys policies and approaches.

It's an oversimplificiation to claim Maher is rooting for a recession because he hates Trump, the context tells us that he thinks a recession is inevitable (which it is, because that's economics and the markets are all massively over leveraged at the moment), but also his opinion is that Trump's presidency threatens American democracy itself, so if he has a choice between recession or authoritarianism, he'd rather see recession.



But on the whole, his larger point is pretty similiar to one Rush Limbaugh made in 2009 when he said “I hope Obama fails.”

I just love the idea that Obama improved the economy but not until he left office and trump flipped a switch and fixed it.

Barack was an idiot that was not qualified to be president and his policies slowed the economy's rebound.
When trump was elected the people invested like someone taking a breath after the boot came off their neck.
I should say people over invested.
The economy will slow again, just not as much.

I have read various economic reports over the years that indicate it takes a couple of years for government economic policy to properly take hold on the economy. As such, i reckon we are roughly getting to the time when Trump's policies will start having an effect.

It does mean though that yes, Obama gets the credit so far but going forward it will be Trump. Or not if it goes wrong!

I think that's probably unfair, Obama inherited the 2008 financial crash disaster. For which Dubya was woefully under equipped to deal with. And he deserves more credit than he gets for turning that around. Because the worlds economy had basically collapsed.

I'm not sure what policies you think he could have enacted that would have righted the economy more quickly?

And there really wasn't a 'Trump bounce' in the economy. Trump just says there was. Based on zero evidence whatsoever.


But hey, there's another argument put forth by a few economicists of my acquaintance that says the economy runs by and large on its own, and the influence of politicians on it is really quite minimal.

I also now a couple of economists that subscribe to that view, with the caveat that governmental policy can affect but usually only detrimentally.

Bush gets far to much credit for the financial crash of 2008 as well don't you think?
Look at how many times he warned about Fannie and Freddie.
Barney frank assured us the they were financially sound until boom.
But don't worry, we got frank Dodd out of it...

And as far as Obama, it wasn't the policies he didn't enact as much as the ones he did.
The aca alone was a huge burden on businesses and it couldn't have come at a worse time.

But you are correct. The economy will run fine if you just leave it alone.

I think everyone listens to the talking heads on TV way too much.
