Imagine if fish had the same discussion 375 million years ago not to leave the water? We would all still be fish and have the IQ of a spatula. There would be no internet, no ATS, and this discussion would not be taking place. I rest my case.

The fish didnt have to go bankrupt while in parallel toying at a at war to end all wars, in outer space, to grow lungs.

Surely you're being sarcastic, right?

You're right, fish do have the IQ of a spatula, so with that spatula IQ, do you honestly believe fish one day said....hey, let's go live on land!! No, fish bred an entirely new species, amphibians, to go live on land! And it took hundreds of thousands of years!!

So where are humans at breeding an entirely new species to go live on Mars, or in Space???? Answer: Nowhere! Nope, people are just running around saying "we" have to escape Earth!

This answer, in and of itself, should tell you how shallow and selfish minded the human creature is. "Fish" never lived on land...their evolutionary descendants, amphibians, did!!

Yet man, in his current form, thinks he can go colonize space???? Nonsense!

C'mon!!!!

No wonder you think we'll never get to Mars if that's your belief! We're not going to breed an 'entirely new species' to explore local space. A few hundred thousand years of evolving a new species...or...send manned missions to Mars in the next 2-3 decades.

And what is the point of paying BILLIONS of dollars to send them there, exactly?

The people DYING to go, maybe they just spend a couple thousand their owndollars and go try and climb Everest or perhaps the "Shark's Fin" climb, instead?

But would they be happy?

If you give it to Earth people, they'll just make more babies.

I think the OP and others are trying to say is that in order to go beyond your normal boundaries it's best to find the right time, the right reason and to use the right methodology.

In the current situation 'going to Mars' while not doing the right missions could waste resources, and lives.

Both of those are of limited supply.

You have to do the right steps in the right order in the right time to solve the problem of space exploration. If you do not then time could expire, or you could fail on a large enough scale as to blow your changes.

we should solve fortean phenomena first before even trying to get off this planet

you are kidding right triangle man?!
o' neil colonies would be ridiculous expensive if one were to be built, possibly even more expensive than an mars city
again i think that we should abandon space exploration and focus on more realistic and interesting issues

I see you missed the MOON BASE i posted for a quick insult. Ill let that speak for itself.

Gosh, we should take this discussion to a different thread for some serious debate.

You apparently did not understand my point, or where I was headed. It's okay, I was responding to another poster who stated fish came out of the sea. And my point was "fish" did NOT come out of the sea, amphibians did. So the analogy is false.

A few "hundred thousand years" of evolution of mankind???? Sure, I'm game! Let's go to Mars then. BUT, right now, the human form is not equipped or capable of dealing with long term space travel.

That was all.

I would have to agree with the Op. Much safer to just send robots. They can answer the big questions without a human actually being there. We haven't even established a moon base as a sort of acclimation towards doing these things. Small steps ought to be taken before huge leaps we know would certainly be a death sentence for humans to go to Mars. Space is hospitable and the moon is hospitable. Especially for long periods of stay. When things go very wrong humans die very easily. Bases would have to be built rather quickly and preferably buried to try and get maximum radiation protection. The moon is protected a little by Earths magnetic field. However, Mars has no magnetic dynamo. So you have a toxic surface, toxic solar radiation, raging sand storms. The moon is a far better choice as a forward base. It can be mined for materials and helium 3 etc. Once established there it would be easier to build outward. If we can't put a base on the Moon, then we certainly cannot put one on Mars. Who knows what technology we might discover along the way working on the moon.]

There are some beautiful, generous, quality people out there of all ages and nationalities.

That even includes the ones I don't care for all that much

We need to get over this self loathing and realize we are mostly OK - as long as we keep thinking. And stay alert

Totally. We all fall short of the ideals (even our own ideals) as a collective species, but everyone has their moments of being 'mostly okay.'

We've got to take it to the stars if for no other reason than preserving our finest moments. Not in some Ozymandias way although that woudn't bother me at all. More for the reasons of showing any future intelligences that we came, we saw and we did many great things.

I want to write something deeper and less clichéd, but I'm running on low batteries.

I'm all about clichés lately. Tried and true. Also: triteness, and over sentimentalized anything - pure schmaltz (can you tell?). In this age of meme worship anything deeper is just a wasted effort

Americans (I'm assuming) are sometimes not so good at the long game. Or maybe it's just humans?

A society grows great when old people plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. – Greek Proverb –

Mars - and then beyond. I only wish I could still be around to see how far we get
