The earthquake hit at 5.29pm GMT (8.29am local time) with the epicentre recorded just 12km north of Anchorage. A tsunami warning is in place for large parts of southern Alaska, including coastal areas around the Cook Inlet and the Southern Kenai Peninsula. Those in at-risk areas are urged to evacuate further inland or to higher ground if possible and be prepared to follow instructions from emergency services.

Anchorage, Alaska (AP) -- A 6.6 magnitude earthquake has rocked buildings in Anchorage and caused lamp posts and trees to sway, prompting people to run out of offices and seek shelter under office desks.

Very scary.

If I'm not mistaken that's for Hawaii. I noticed that in my search as well.

Those would have been auto-located/calculated numbers. Below is a manually calculated result.

GFZ has it at 7.0 from manual calculations:

F-E Region: Southern Alaska

Magnitude: 7.0 (Mw)

The tsunami warning is for Alaska. That alert says no warning for Hawaii.

The news media keeps pushing the magnitude number higher...just like they do with Hurricanes.

Better for click bait. They don't let a tragedy go to waste. I just heard a girl an office over say, and I quote, "Oh wow, an earthquake just hit Alaska. 6.7 magnitude!" I've heard 7.0, 7.2, and 8.0.

Several aftershocks coming in now, all fairly low magnitude.

I lived through it!!

It was a hellofa lot stronger than a 7.2M!

I am thinking more like an 8.0 - 8.5 range. Things were knocked off shelves and desks. A 7.0 does not even come closed.

It just kept on building, and building, and building. Then it really started to rock and roll. It went on for a long duration (where is that in the reports?). We have had several strong aftershocks. Electricity is fluctuating across mid-town. My part of the office is the only place that has power!

Building management is doing a walkthrough now. A bunch of people went home to check on damage (I have heard of pictures knocked off the wall, broken panes/glass). All our office windows are intact. Power is coming back to mid-town. Really scared the hell out of the folks new to Anchorage. I had my empty insulated coffee mug, an empty plastic (still in wrapper) water cup fall over, and my empty growler of iced coffee all fall over. My co-worker's monitor fell off the desk.

Epicenter was 10 miles (~6.2 K) north of Anchorage so the folks at JBER/Eagle River/Mat-Su felt it pretty strongly too! Even my half-sister down in Juneau felt it.

I expect the magnitude to go up (first reports were 5.6, then 6.0, then 7.0, now 7.2, but the amount of stuff shaken (shooked??) off shelves and what not, the final report has yet to come in).

Glad we have gotten that out of our system!

We've got members (and a mod, too, I believe) in the Anchorage area, I hope they're ok. That's a big quake, hopefully it was deep enough to not do too much damage

Reporting from the big 3 seismic organizartions (USGS, EMSC, GFZ) place this between 30 to 40 km depth. That's fairly shallow for an M7 and as a result surface damage would be expected to be in the moderate to severe range. If it were significantly deeper, there would not be near as much shaking at the surface. The shallowness of the quake is what has made for the amount of damage done.

Manual calculations are consistent in the M7 range.
