Haley resigned according to sources a week before the 9th - approximately when Khashoggi went missing. It's also been reported that Trump knew about this as soon as it happened

what is the correct play here? What could Trump do to be "right" in your eyes?

The US should just stay out of it. Obviously from past experience, we can’t fix the entire world. It’s time to move on and spend our money on more important things.

He hasn't seemed to be a ball-passer so far. In fact, he picked up the kicked-down-the-road can that's China which I found quite ballsy.

I couldn't blame him for kicking this one, however. If he does engage, and assuming for a moment the CNN report is true, I think his only option is to say okay they did it but no we aren't going to do anything that would break relations and give Iran a foothold and then just weather the criticism.
