The system detects friendly aircraft, but that doesn't mean that the missiles are 100% accurate, or reliable. If a missile lost lock on its target, it would start looking for it, and could mistakenly lock onto an aircraft in the area.

Might be a countermeasure trying to protect the target area.

Russia blames Israel after military plane shot down off Syria www.bbc.co.uk...

Updated bbc news article. Things are getting hotter

The spokesman accused Israeli pilots of "using the Russian airplane as a cover", putting it "in the line of fire coming from Syrian air defence systems

This was copied and quoted from the bbc news article. Very interesting, the article also states Russia claiming the Israelis only have a minuets notice of the attacks

I don't think that the Israeli's would want to call ahead for reservations.

Well, a Russian-made (probably) Syrian missile shoots down a Russian plane and the Russian blame Israel. That figures. Whatever was going on in the Israeli attacks against Iranian facilities in Syria (assumed) the Syrians should have been able to differentiate the radar signature of a large Russian aircraft.

Just dont fly recon off of the Lebanese coast when the IAF uses the airspace to conduct attacks on a regular basis and you cant trust your allies not to shoot at everything in sight.
The attack was flown by F-16s not F-35Is, so the Russians should have been aware that something could go down with or without advanced Israeli warnings.

I dont think Israel is entirely innocent in this, at best ignoring the presence of the Il-20, but there is more than enough blame to go around. Russia is doing nothing to defuse the situation atm.

EDIT:
My bad.. the Aljazeera article is the wrong article i linked. It should have been Reuters and how Iran is giving missiles to Iraq and Syria to "protect the region"
www.reuters.com...

PARIS/BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iran has given ballistic missiles to Shi’ite proxies in Iraq and is developing the capacity to build more there to deter attacks on its interests in the Middle East and to give it the means to hit regional foes, Iranian, Iraqi and Western sources said

Snippit...

Western countries have already accused Iran of transferring missiles and technology to Syria and other allies of Tehran, such as Houthi rebels in Yemen and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

So according to the Israelis, the aircraft in question was outside the area of operations and only downed because the Syrians fired indiscriminately.

EDIT direct source

twitter.com...

An initial inquiry of the incident suggests:
1. Extensive and inaccurate Syrian anti-aircraft (Surface to Air missile) fire caused the Russian plane to be hit and downed.
2. When the Syrian Army launched the missiles that hit the Russian plane, IAF jets were already within Israeli airspace.
3. During the strike against the target in Latakia, the Russian plane that was then hit was not within the area of the operation.
4. The Syrian anti-air batteries fired indiscriminately and from what we understand, did not bother to ensure that no Russian planes were in the air.

Looks like Russia is blaming the wrong party involved.

I'm hoping cooler heads prevail, but I've read some interesting findings digging into this.

I'm sure we all know that in the past few weeks Russia claimed that there may be a false flag chemical attack.

The US responded some time later saying we would retaliate if any chemical weapons were used.

Russia then doubled down war ning the US not to strike should their be a chemical attack

Russia has held air superiority over the region with the help of the air defense system currently in place in Syria. But with the rhetoric increasing, the US has positioned a small aircraft carrier with F-35Bs to ensure our airspace capabilities. This would mark the first time they see theater, and also the first time the Russians would see them in action in shared airspace.

While these events aren't ideal, we have had closer run ins, like when the US killed scores of Russian mercenaries in Syria some months ago.

Russia is claiming that the Israelis were shadowing that plane indirectly getting it shot down.

I haven't read any source where Russia claims the Israelis downed the plane, but rather are saying it was a result of their actions.

And i never said that?
Its a result of their actions as far as they got the Syrian AD to open up at everything in range after the fact. Thats really not their fault, Russia should blame Syria for being incompetent *****.
Not the first time the Syrians did that anywy. Just the first time they hit something.

Russian air superiority is very localised and somewhat constrained by the fact the UK, French and US are flying around, and by Turkey to the North and Israel to the South and West. Plus, all these Russian-supplied anti air defences seem to have effectiveness if the amount of air activity going on is to believed. Perhaps there is a training issue?

Anyway, the last thing that will happen is a real military confrontation between Israel and Russia. It would likely be embarrassing for Russia.

Agreed, the west hasn't really made it a point to capture air superiority.

My guess is Russia will just bite the bullet and move on. However I do think this will put strain on their relations with Israel.

Sounds like typical Syrian anti-air. Get bombed. Launch a barrage of missiles in the hope of hitting something. Claim to successfully shot down the attacking aircraft, without providing any evidence.

Too bad there was a Russian plane in the air this time.

Looks like Natanyahu and Putin spoke on the phone, and Russia is backtracking from their strong language on this indecent.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Israel was not responsible for the downing of a Russian military aircraft during a strike on Syria Monday night. "It looks like a chain of tragic circumstances, because the Israeli plane didn't shoot down our jet," he said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on the phone with Putin and expressed his condolences, but added that the responsibility for the downing of the Russian plane rests with Syria. He also reiterated that Israel is determined to prevent Iran from gaining a military foothold in Syria and thwart Tehran's attempts to aid Hezbollah with lethal weapons against Israel.
