It's easy.

Nobody really liked Clinton. Especially after it was shown what she did to win the primaries. Most far left people that would have voted for Sanders, either didn't vote...or voted Green Party. She didn't excite the far left base. Many people I talked to personally told me to vote for Clinton to stop Trump. Not because Clinton was a great candidate, but because they only wanted to stop Trump. You can't win an election like that.

Trump did excite the far right base and they voted for him in droves...he made sure they voted for him by picking pence as his "Christian" running mate.

It's that easy...you don't need any more analysis.

People want Change and they want an outsider or...for most people, someone that appears to be an outsider.

Obama appeared to be an outsider campaigning on hope and change. Sanders appeared to be an outsider and got amazing support. Trump appeared to be an outsider and won.

Trump may not win again, because of all the turmoil and his lack of etiquette and his thin skin. But He will win if the Democrats push through someone who appears to be an insider, like Kamala harris or corey booker or Joe biden.

People want an outsider or someone that appears to be an outsider.

For the Democrats...they need to think big..like Michelle Obama...she appears to be an outsider or oprah or Zuckerberg or someone like that with huge name recognition like Trump had.

My take on the 2016 election

There has been a growing sentiment by the populace over the last few decades that politicians and the “Washington establishment” do not, in fact, work to the betterment of the average American, but rather for the enrichment of the wealthy elite who hold the strings of money and power. This sentiment seems to have crossed the threshold of a plurality sometime during the second term of the younger Bush. The American public had collectively decided that if the country was to move in a new direction, it would have to be with new leadership, not the same old career politician types we had been electing up to that point. So here we were in 2008 presented with a choice between an old John McCain, ultimate Washington insider, and a junior legislator from Illinois who was young, Ivy-League educated, charming, and running a campaign of “Hope and Change.” Not only could we elect a transformational president but the first African-American would also represent an historically important presidency, a win-win. I believe the election of Obama was the first shot across the establishment’s bow.

Now I don’t believe Obama was a great president nor do I believe he was a terrible president. Unfortunately, however, he seems to have fallen into the Washington swamp and never really delivered the transformation of American politics that we were hoping for. Now in 2012, the Republicans, who were still oblivious to this shift in the electorate, put up Romney, a mega-wealthy, New England elite, who for most voters would have been a step backward, and Obama easily won a second term. During that second term, however, scandal started erupting (Lois Lerner, Benghazi, etc) and America was once again in the position of being lied to and manipulated by a corrupt ruling class aided by a pandering media.

So that brings us to 2016. American voters were desperate for something different, anything, in fact other than the status quo. So much so, that a fair number on the left were willing to elect a self-proclaimed Socialist and as it turned out enough on the right were willing to elect a loud-mouthed, unpredictable Trump. Hillary never had a chance. That’s how he won.

Agreed with the Hillary angle. She was a terrible choice as well - and even with that terrible of a choice, Trump barely managed to win. That's what you get when you have the choice of having a wasps nest rammed onto your head, or jumping into a pit of angry and poisonous danger noodles.

I just think both sides of government are out to fleece the people, while people are happy taking sides I simply see both sides as having the same goal, so yes it's a good thing your healthcare hasn't gotten worse...yet...as I suspect its coming.

He won because of the two candidates he had the better ideas.

I have doubled my income in the last 10 years, yet find that I cannot purchase what I could 10 years ago. Monopoly money. We are fighting over less than crumbs.

Many of us no matter where we come from are having similar issues,.

Interestly though the European socialist countries are not having such vast disparities like we do here in oz and in the U.S.

That makes me suspicious that all the negative press aimed at those countries is by design to keep the plebs infighting, that suspicion is reinforced every time I see an american saying stuff like " Socialist Europe is failed, immigrants have taken over etc etc .
