Been a few lately...Luckily Pilot survived and is stable.

A T-38C Talon II trainer aircraft crashed after it departed the runway before taking off from Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, Tuesday morning, the base said in a release. The two pilots of the T-38 ejected from the aircraft. One pilot, U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Charles Walet, was taken to United Regional Medical Center in Wichita Falls and is reportedly stable, according to an update from the base posted on social media Tuesday afternoon. The other, German air force Maj. Christian Hartmann, was taken to the Sheppard Clinic and treated for minor injuries.

I was sitting outside Dyess when it happened. I was tracking two T-38s that I was hoping were coming to play in the area. I went back about 15 minutes later and all the T-38s in the area were gone.

The pilot being treated on base is Maj. Christian Hartman. He's a member of the Luftwaffe. The pilot that was transported off base is 1st Lt. Charles Walet. He's TDY from Vance AFB in Oklahoma.

Temporary Duty. When you're assigned to one base, but are sent to another for a period of time.

Saw one belly land at March once.Nose gear wouldn`t lock so they slid in,it was repaired and flying again in a couple of months.

This one won't be. For starters, the cockpit is heavily damaged from the ejection. It looks like the landing gear is probably heavily damaged, which causes other damage around it. It's not worth repairing with the T-X announcement due within the next two weeks.

Any bets on who is going to win? I'm hoping the underdog (Leonardo) pulls off the "W". Not sure how they are going to sell around the non-conformance with the top speed requirement but the cost of their aircraft is attractive.

My money is on Boeing. The Pentagon is going to protect their industrial base at all costs. I really like the T-50A though. They brought one to Like Days. It's a pretty little jet.

Thanks for the response Zaphod.

Agreed - also a long shot for Leonardo to establish the supply-chain and provisioning to support their offering. Safe to bet on Boeing or KAI/Lockheed.

As much fun as it would be to watch the heads explode when they announce Leonardo, that's going to be the deciding factor. Boeing and Lockheed can hit the ground running, even with both having foreign partners. Leonardo would have to build their line first.

a reply to: Zaphod58 Not to mention that was 30 years ago when they were a lot newer. From the sound of it this was a far more serious accident.By the way, both pilots were fine after the belly in I watched, both jumped out and cleared the aircraft as soon as it stopped sliding.Didn`t blame them at all after all the sparks they threw and what fuel they still had, couldnt dump it all and still fly in to the runway.
