The social studies curriculum for seventh graders in Texas learning about the Alamo could reportedly face some new changes, at least one of which has drawn the ire of the governor.
Removing the word “heroic” to describe those who protected the Alamo was among the items included in a report penned by an advisory panel to the State Board of Education on how to structure the curriculum, Dallas News reported on Friday.

Is my title hyperbolic? Today it is. Tomorrow? Probably not.

When we distort history to suit a social trend, we eliminate the historical significance of what history tries to teach us.


It's a disturbing trend, when we see statues torn down, names changed.

We aren't paying true homage to history. We're making is nice, clean and sanitary. Antiseptic.

We can apply this to every aspect in history. Sure, history is written by the victors and is already distorted by the impressions of the writer. But if we ever found out that Plato was a misogynist, would we then discount his telling of Atlantis?

We need to keep our hands off history.

We can't change the past, we must not try by rewriting it.


Right now it's just eliminating the word "heroic" from the telling of the Alamo.

They who control the narrative of history, own the future. The US we may have once known, is passing away at light speed. Living in Texas and having had a relative who died in the defense of the Alamo, and having watched what they are planning for the redesign of Alamo Plaza, I can tell you it wouldn't surprise me at all if they just tore it down and put up some exhibit honoring Santa Anna.

As they say, demographics is destiny. And in that is some comfort.
