A Dallas police officer shot and killed a man after entering an apartment unit she believed was her own, police said.

The shooting happened at the South Side Flats before 10 p.m., about one block from the Dallas Police Department Headquarters.

In a news conference early Friday morning, Dallas Sgt. Warren Mitchell said the officer was heading home after working a full shift when she walked into an apartment unit she believed was her own.

After entering the unit, she was confronted by a 26-year-old man, identified by the medical examiner's office as Botham Shem Jean. At some point, the officer fired her weapon, hitting him, police said.

Shocking and sad. At home in your place and an officer mistakes your place for theirs. Boom.

Wondering what the story will be for this one.

"He did no one any wrong," she said.

Ain't that the truth...

Beginning to think police shouldn't be allowed to have guns.

I have to think she didn't take the time to say much or hear and understand "This is my apartment officer".

Didn't you know? all police officers are hero because 9/11 and the police union will protect her because even though she wasn't on duty police officers by definition are incapable of committing any crimes.

nothing will happen but a bunch of theatrics, and press conferences and then everyone will forget.

GUARANTEE they find a way to clear her.

"The individual acted in a threatening manner and she feared for her life"

$50. Any takers?

It could have been planned due to a previous altercation with the man and thinks people would believe and forgive the wrong apartment part.

That's just insane....does she have exactly the same furniture as him? How does she not recognize her own apartment after opening the door? I've got a mate who painted his driveway white so that when he came home drunk he knew where to park....was she drunk?

That would seem to be the only play at this point. Feared for her life and couldn't escape.

I'd guess, the victim was in his own apartment and had the door unlocked.

The officer went to the door thinking it was hers and found it unlocked causing her to believe there was a break in so she entered the home pistol drawn..

Of course that's just my guess..

Either way it's an awful situation and my heart goes out to the victim and his family.

The officer should be fired, charged, and served a civil suit by his family..

Respectfully,

I can see it now too, her all authoritative, not letting him speak, gun drawn, yelling at the 'perp'...

this is one example that MUST be taken into account. And not dismissed.

They shouldn't have guns, most cops nowadays are unsocial steam rolling sour grapes that got picked on in highschool. Its crazy they can carry guns. They give everybody panic attacks with their cowboy toting gun holsters.

I had the same thought earlier. Shot an intruder that was an officer. Everything would be done to prove him at fault.

Pretty sure that is what is not being said.... she was a lil tipsy after happy hour.

I've accidentally gone to wrong car, apartment door, etc before but almost always quickly noticed as soon as door opened or didn't open.

Just this last weekend, I was on vacation and had a rental car. I barely knew what color the car was and went to the grocery store. Came out in the general area my car was parked, opened the door and it was someone else's car. Just happened to notice as soon as I opened the door that my daughter's baby seat wasn't in the back.
