I have been experiencing some pretty weird occurrences recently and would like to share them with anyone who has an interest in the paranormal.
About Me
I am medically retired (mid-50s) with a debilitating illness which leaves me housebound most of the time. I am registered disabled and a part-time
wheelchair user. I live in East Yorkshire, England with my mother who cares for me. I am not religious.
Background
Three years ago we purchased a first floor apartment from an elderly lady who was in a nursing home with dementia. We had presumed her son and
daughter sold the apartment on her behalf. The agent also informed us that the apartment had been empty for 2 years. Apart from the really nice
views from the balcony there was a small room next to the living room. This would become my sitting room (enough space for a desktop computer and also
a reclining chair with a TV. In the first year residing there we had a complete renovation undertaken including the windows. The plan is to have a
stair lift if my overall function deteriorates any further.
At the beginning of this year a neighbour told us the old lady had died at the grand old age of 101. We have since found out she had only lived here
for around 10 years. She had never married and the apartment was not actually hers. A male friend, who had since died, had taken pity on her
circumstances and let her live in the apartment for free until she died. The son and daughter were actually his children not hers. As she was in a
home with dementia they decided to sell to free up their inheritance.
Occurrences
For around 6 months I have occasionally seen something fleeting in my peripheral vision whilst watching tv. Something dark in colour. It seems to
come from the hallway into the living room. My sitting room is adjacent to the living room and I tend to have the door open whilst watching tv. It
has not happened frequently, maybe once every 1-2 weeks. Its not something that has particularly bothered me. Looking back we have also had several
instances of items disappearing. The odd thing was these everyday objects reappeared in the most obvious places we had previously looked. I didn't
think much about this and did not link the two events.
Fast forward to around three months ago. I had started waking up abruptly around 3:30am to 4:00am with increasing frequency. The atmosphere felt
quite oppressive and for some reason I felt like something was watching me. I am not scared of the dark or things that go bump in the night etc. I
did not see anything untoward while laying there. Initially I dismissed it as being an unsettling feeling after possibly having a bad dream and went
back to sleep.
The next day my mother informed me that on several occasions she had woken and seen my light on and checked me to see if I was ok. She turned the
light off after finding me asleep. This has happened on several occasions. I cannot remember leaving the light on. She had difficulty going back to
sleep one night and told me my light went on again after she turned it off.
Around this time I started having intrusive thoughts which were obscene and often aggressive. They were not thoughts on their own but added on to my
own thinking like a response to a thought. Several of these thoughts have upset me. I know they are not my own thoughts. They are alien to me. As
well as the intrusive thoughts I started experiencing my hair tingling. This reminded me of the time we touched the Van de Graaff machine at
school.
Last week I awoke a 3:30 am and it felt like something was stroking my back. From where I was laying I was able to reach out and put my bedside lamp
on which lights up when you touch the base. There was nothing there. I got up and made myself a hot drink and tried to reassure myself that I had
most likely imagined it. I went back to bed but didn't fall asleep until dawn. As I was laying there I could see faint circular lights in darting
around near the ceiling.
The following day was disconcerting. I usually have a 2 hours sleep in the afternoon due to my illness but this day I lay awake. I remembered the
earlier incidents. I managed to calm myself down and decided I would do some relaxation breathing. That night I went to bed feeling less unsettled
and fell asleep fairly quickly. At 3:30am the burglar alarm went off. The control panel is next to my bedroom door and I could see zone 3 had
triggered the alarm which is the living room. There was no one there and the security lights outside had not come on. I reset the alarm, reassured my
mother who had got up and went back to bed. I didn't fall asleep until dawn.
The next morning my mother said she was puzzled by the alarm going off. The security alarm is just over 2 years old and of the wireless kind. I have
not had any problems with it since it was installed and the low battery indicator on the panel was not flashing. Zone 3 has a PIR detector and also a
door contact. We had changed the batteries 3 months previously. I thought it may have been a spider walking on the PIR sensor and my mother
agreed.
That night I was apprehensive following an emotional build-up from the afternoon so I took a sleeping tablet. I fell asleep almost immediately and
didn't wake until the following morning. I spent most of the day either resting or reading the news papers but the memory of the hand that touched my
back was still niggling me. I did some reading on protective visualisation. I visualised a wall of protection around my bed. I decided not to have
a sleeping pill that night as I was determined, whatever this is, it wasn't going to get the better of me.
Immediately after laying down in bed I felt a heavy pressure to the side of me like someone sitting down. I focused on visualising my protective wall
expanding to push whatever this was off the bed. At exactly the same time the protective field hit this thing on my bed the security alarm started
ringing. I jumped out of bed in the dark and checked the control panel. This time it was zone 2 which is my sitting room. Again there was no one
there. The outside security lights had not come on. Luckily the alarm had not awoken my mother. I didn't sleep for the remainder of the night.
Whilst staring at the ceiling from my bed in the dark I noticed translucent blacker than black shapes above my head near the ceiling. Maybe one every
5 minutes darting across my room at high speed. I also noticed a strange smell but it was fleeting and I could not make out what it was. I reinforced
my visual protection wall but remained awake until dawn.
I awoke at midday and decided to ask my mother if she had noticed anything odd recently. She mentioned seeing something darting across in her
peripheral vision. She had also woken up several times around 3:30am with a distinct feeling something was watching her. Last night I was tempted to
take another sleeping tablet but held off. I was awake for most of the night (with the light off). Those faint lights and dark clouds were there
again but apart from that the night was uneventful.
