First, let me say that I am pretty computer illiterate. I have a picture that was sent to me, a personal pic of family. I am wondering, is there something online that will tell me if it's been photoshopped or been messed with in any way? Also, it has to be free because I'm kind of poor! Thanks in advance.

This is free (partly, I think? Anyway there are similar things online that ARE free, just google); can give it a shot:

exif.regex.info...

Use that site, it will give you info about the metadata attached to the image. If it's been edited, this information will be very sparse, or have direct evidence of the editing tool.

metadata = almost meaningless , evven crop // resize will flag an image file as " edited "

OP i realise the pic = private from your real life - but can you give context of what it shows - and why you have reason to suspect that its edited ????

the quality of apps that CLAIM to detect image manipulation = variable - and on a consumer level - the ability of users to operate them - diabolicaly poor

i am unaware of any free ones that are of any use

What are your suspicions the pics has been altered? A good reason as to why would go a long way, I think. If there's family's names involved, change 'em to A, B, C, etc.

There's no real way of knowing if an image was edited if the person(s) that did the editing knew what he/she was doing.

Also, most free methods use Level Error Analysis, a method that may show if an image was altered, but that method is based on JPEG compression, so it doesn't work on non-JPEG images and fails if the image is altered and then saved with a higher compression (worst image quality).

Anyway, here's a link to a site that uses Error Level Analysis.
