Nasa have updated and released the newest data on their list of Near Earth Objects mostly asteroids that float around in our solar system

NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies Enters Third Decade. On March 11, 1998, asteroid astronomers around the world received an ominous message: new observational data on the recently discovered asteroid 1997 XF11 suggested there was a chance that the half-mile-wide (nearly one kilometer) object could hit Earth in 2028. The message came from the Minor Planet Center, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the worldwide repository for such observations and initial determination of asteroid orbits. And although it was intended to alert only the very small astronomical community that hunts and tracks asteroids to call for more observations, the news spread quickly. Most media outlets did not know what to make of the announcement, and mistakenly highlighted the prospect that Earth was doomed.

Now with all the terrible things going on in the world , we have all of those NEO's just floating around there
not to scare anyone or DOOM PORN it up, but we could be hit by one of those objects and life as we know it would pretty much be over

but that doesnt mean its all doom and gloom , anything could end your life , now or in 5 minutes, tomorrow , a month , a year, a decade from now !
so take risks, chase your dreams , fall in love , get your heart broken , try and experience everything possible before your loop is over and starts again!

Fortunately, it turned out that Earth was never in danger from 1997 XF11. After performing a more thorough orbit analysis with the available asteroid observations, Don Yeomans, then the leader of the Solar System Dynamics group at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, along with his colleague Paul Chodas, concluded otherwise. "The 2028 impact was essentially impossible," said Chodas, who is now director of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), located at JPL. "To this day we still get queries on the chances of XF11 impacting in 2028," Chodas said. "There is simply no chance of XF11 impacting our planet that year, or for the next 200 years."

Luckily we have NASA to track these objects for us and let us know if we are Doomed !

never the less its appreciated and extremely cool to think about all those objects just floating around in our solar system
think of the day when we have private corporations out there mining these NEO's for rare elements

Great thread! And that GIF was awesome and scary at the same time. Thank NASA and all the others including ze Russians for monitoring these things.
The part about the mining will come very shortly I imagine.

and its a sea of NEO's

Aye Im excited for the future of humans in space , its a scary place and totally inhospitable to humans , and therefore is our last great frontier !

I think we are collectively dropping the ball by not being out there as a species
instead of us all fighting over the left right , ego world we live in now !

its pretty bad that I spend most of my day uploading youtube videos for my employer, embedding videos into our own websites and I still havent figured that out on ATS !

well we are quite lucky actually as we have Saturn and Jupiter to guard us as well as Sol , they tend to attract and suck up most of the bigger yins from the Kupier asteroid belt which fall out and look earth bound!

even these smaller ones are still big enough to cause significant damage and loss of life!

all it would take is a 1mile wide object to hit earth it would kick up enough dust to block the sun for weeks and cause death and damage to our global agricultural output.

luckily the majority of the 18K total are less than a mile wide !

I remember reading that a meteor the size of a volts wagon bug could destroy states, they learned this after watching those row of asteroids impact on Jupiter, Nasa realized they were wrong about how big a meteor would have to be to cause damage, if one made it to the surface of the earth that big. IDK maybe I got mandella'd and that doesn't happen anymore HA!

Not only am I getting far too cynical but recently I've found myself almost wishing for one of these worst case scenario NEO or emergent malevolent alien life form to actually occur.

On topic; does NASA or any other agency have the wherewithal to actually eliminate such a threat as a large NEO and if they haven't how far away are they from having such a capability?

All things considered surely it's only a matter of time before something poses a real and live threat?

I am kind of the same, id be really happy if I didnt have to pay taxes to a corrupt system and all my work was done for survival instead of lining other peoples pockets

Id be able to live on my parents farm if it wasnt hit already or the sun wasnt blocked out completely
and I could just live off the land !

I think NASA would just seek to give the asteroid a glancing blow , as not to break it up
I think any no nuclear explosive or sound wave or something which would give it a bit of momentum in the opposite direction!
Maybe we should be speaking to O'sullivan , Hendry , Higgins, WHite , and Davis !
