as I understand it

left-wing dems proposed the bill to satisfy their more extreme supporters, figuring McConnell would kill it in committee. instead he let it go through to be voted on. once they had to go on the record they backtracked.
politicians hate it when they have to commit to something.

DEMs can point to the bill and say it was fast tracked instead of properly going through committee thus is not a finished product they can support. Then Mitch has a bunch of DEMs not voting to abolish ICE.

If you say so......the optics are the Democrats didn't vote for a law they proposed to eliminate ICE.

This only means Cali is moving further left than even Feinstein

If you can't see how stupid that makes them look than you simply can not see. I prefer my elected officials think and properly vet bills before they submit them. I don't want to vote for it and read it later.

But what happens if the GOP'ers do vote for this abomination?? Then the Uber Libs in the Senate have to grab this hot potato. This stupidity might then become a Jack@#$ devouring trap. A few years ago, I had a Pickup camper pulling a small horse trailer with a ramp rear door. I unhooked the trailer so my wife and I could egress our camper without crawling over the hitch. I could load my saddle horse with it hitched, easy. But without it being hitched, I just tied ol Dobbin off on the side of it. Went to sleep, the moon came up, and a Jack@#$# from down the road, came a visiting. There was enough teaser grain left on the front shelf, inside of the trailer's nose metal, that the visitor walked up into it for a freebie meal.

About that time, the trailer's ramp folded down, flexing the trailer up in the air. The nose sheet metal, in the moonlight, looked like some beast jumping out at the Jack@##$, who made a frightful noise. Then it backed itself rapidly to the rear, and a couple of large pieces of logging cable sticking up out of the ground, impaled it, you know where. Then all H@#l broke loose, and even my own saddle horse went bonkers.

So, out I went as quick as possible, and I had to settle down my still tied off horse, while the Jack@##$ took off back up the road to it's campsite's corral, or thereabouts. So I've been down this road, and I know for a fact, that Jack@#$es can really do things like this, unto themselves. And it's best for everyone nearby to just stand back and watch the circus.

That old long ears, was smelling the teaser grain I left in my trailer's sheet metal nose, and Jacka#$es really will go the distance for a freebie meal.

Except they can't vote no and then tell their hard left constituents they would have voted yes. That's the problem today, politicians just say what they want to get reelected and not what they actually think is good for America.

Overall it doesn't matter what the legislation says since only 43% of Dems voted in favor it.

In typical liberal fashion this ICE fiasco is designed to garner an emotional response and build off Trump-hating.
