President Donald Trump is announcing that he is directing the Pentagon to create the ‘Space Force’ as an independent service branch.

Trump said Monday that “we are going to have the space force” which he deemed a “separate but equal” branch of the military.

Trump says the United States will “be the leader by far” in space and looks to revive the nation’s flagging space program.

The president framed space as a national security issue, saying he does not want “China and Russia and other countries leading us.”

Someone needs to tell the President that space is pretty well covered by the existing branches of the military.

Especially Navy. People naturally think Air Force, but Air Force owns everything in the atmosphere. Beyond that...

It's all Navy...

But with that said I agree with the President completely. I believe it should be it's own branch of the military. They have unique challenges, require unique skill sets in their ranks, and it's only going to continue to increase in importance and relevance over time.

The good news is that Navy, Army & Air Force already have some terrific people. They would be a great start for that branch. But then they need to really ramp up the recruiting efforts at Cal-Tech, MIT, etc.

Best & the brightest. And we have them. We just need to inspire them.

Like JFK did for a whole generation of Americans.

I give Trump credit for stating what is true and putting his name and the weight of his office behind it.

I wasn't really a Trump fan at first - hell I didn't even vote for him. But he has consistently impressed me with his accomplishments in his short tenure in office.

Now his words...well...they're another story. But I love that he still speaks his mind - regardless of criticism. Agree with his positions or not, I think we can all agree that he has courage in his convictions.

Isn't that refreshing?

Latest "news" is that the new Space Force's main charter will be to direct the cleanup of all the satellite debris in space.

Umm...yeah....sure.

I’d posit that a Trump built space agency would become terrestrial pretty fast. If any of his past projects are an indication.

What DARPA is doing and/or working with private companies related to "space" is truly mind boggling. They're already using computing technology that won't hit the commercial market for years.

Think D-Wave - cubed.

Then it should be the United Nations Space Sanitation Corps who are responsible.

Bottom line: Neil DeGrasse Tyson has lamented the killing of childhood imagination and dreaming with the demise of NASA. The former efforts to get into space spurned a technological boom that was unthinkable to prior generations, and heralded a massive change in human daily living.

Over the last 20 years this has dwindled, with STEM classes being ignored in favor of various liberal arts curriculum. And it shows in our ability to compete in the global market (for the love of God, look at what our dollar is worth).

Trump may fumble it....but what he is doing here seems in line with what folks like Tyson have been clammoring for.

Separate but equal.

So you're saying Trump's a racist.

Maybe you were trying to be sarcastically humorous. If not, it's that type of thinking that has kept us from really pushing the boundaries here. And pushing the boundaries means allocating and spending the dollars.

Spend & discover - or die.

Those are our choices.

Tax dollars spent to clean up space debris as trash and plastic blow down the streets of America and clog up the oceans.

Seems like a plan....

It's attitudes like this that just kill me.

I have a message for all the millennials and other snowflakes out there:

Do you know who keeps this comfy little world spinning every day for you?

We do.

The Boomers.

And do you know why?

Because we finally realized that the older we got, the smarter our fathers got.

So when president Kennedy threw down the gauntlet and said "We will put a man on the moon". We did it.

Because we had to. And because it was a lot more critical to our success as a species than keeping the streets free of litter. And he sparked something in us - something all people have but don't pay heed to. We are explorers. That's exactly who and what we are. And like it or not, we're all in this soup together.

Take that away and we're just sheep.

I don't bleat very well. Never have.

Every time people laugh at Trump, it turns oit he really knew something we did not, and he was right.

I wonder what he knows now!

At the very least he is bringing us into the future. We were stagnant on our investments in this area.

Trump says the United States will “be the leader by far” in space and looks to revive the nation’s flagging space program.

As long as that's the civilian space program those are encouraging words , I hope his actions meet his words and we can get some ambition back into the space program.
