A weather camera on an island in Washington state on Sunday captured a mystery object that appears to some to be a missile in ascent.

These photos were taken in the early morning hours over Whidbey Island, where there is a naval air station. But a spokesman from NAS Whidbey Island said there are no missile capabilities at the base.

Well if it's not a missile, or even something we have, then what is it?

To me it looks like a missile.

Maybe it came from a submarine or a warship?

This looks to be a rocket of some sort. Not sure why it's in this forum. Good catch though. I do want to see where this goes.

Most likely a sub launched ICBM test launch.

Just because they said there isn't doesn't mean there isn't. Plus, he'd have some sort of info as to what it was being a fricking NAVAL AIR BASE and all....

Most likely a sub launched ICBM test launch.

It does look as if it was fired from the water passed the island.

Here's some more information from a Seattle Fox affiliate (any ideas what, if any, relevance the helicopter may have had with the object?):
SOURCE

A weather camera on an island in Washington state on Sunday captured a mystery object that appears to some to be a missile in ascent, Q13Fox.com reported. The object was spotted at 3:56 a.m. over Whidbey Island, where there is a naval air station. But a spokesman from NAS Whidbey Island said there are no missile capabilities at the base. "There's a lot of speculation around here,” Tom Mills, the spokesman, said. "But it's definitely not a missile launch." A professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington speculated that the object looks like a missile. “I’ve seen a lot of stuff,” Cliff Mass, the professor, said. “But nothing like this.”There was reportedly an air ambulance helicopter in the vicinity of the northern Kitsap Peninsula that was flying at the same time the shot was taken.

ETA: My first "real" girlfriend was a direct descendant of Captain Joseph Whidbey for which the explorer Captain George Vancouver named Whidbey Island in his honor.

Some of you guys need to learn PAO speak. IF this is real, the Public Affairs officer told the absolute truth. There are no capabilites to launch a missile like that on the base. He didn't say a word about anything off the base, such as a ship just off the coast, outside the base.

But for what purpose? Certainly a SLBM test would require NOTAMs for the area? If it’s not a test, but a live launch, that opens up a whole other can of worms. This reminds me of the supposed SLBM launch off the coast of California a few years ago....nothing ever came of that, that I recall.

Yep, the super subs come in there constantly.

With just a fish locator, one sees lots stuff down at 600 feet I saw a sub stationary on the bottom at Tulalip

And a jellyfish the size of a house only 11 feet under, and while I was thinking it must be wrong, the boat 50 feet over said the same thing.

You guys think that pic looks more like a flashlight pointing down? A big one huh!

That wasn't an SLBM. That might have been an SM-3/6 or seaRAM, but that's why I said IF it's real. The NOTAM would cover a fairly small area, and several days time as well.

Estes Master kit maybe?

Looking further, that's a SM-3. No doubt in my mind.

It could be something going up or something moving toward the camera. Both give a similar picture.

There is a SSBN base on the Kitsap Peninsula and a ship base in Bremerton and Everett that are home to carriers as well as the Whidbey NAS. No shortage of naval power in Puget Sound / Hood Canal / Strait of Juan de Fuca, etc.
