VISA Network Crashes sparking payment chaos.

Well this isn't good....

Millions of people have been left unable to pay for goods and services in shops, petrol stations and railway stations across Britain and Europe after an unprecedented crash in Visa’s payment system.

Seems to have been over the last hour that this problem has sparked. I saw when it first broke it seem to be isolated to the UK but now the way the story is going it looks like it could be Europe wide.

Apparently Barclays have came out and advised people to withdraw cash from ATMs.

This could cause massive problems, hope they fix it soon

South east Ireland here. I was in the town earlier and the supermarket (Aldi) were only accepting cash. We have a thunder storm with lots of lightning at the moment, I figured something was damaged. Thanks for the info.

People who hack and do this should be classified as terrorists, and receive the appropriate penalty, Hanging. DDOS ? I doubt it's purely mechanical.

Smart vendors already have a stack of CC authorization forms sitting at the ready.

Sure, it creates a bit of backlog....but when your goal is to make money, you just don't let it go walking out the door.

What info do you have that indicates it is an Infosec scenario vs the normal outage?

And this is why I keep cash in a safe at home and an "emergency only" $100 in 20s folded into one of the card pockets in my wallet.

Visa recently cracked down on the darkweb and purchases there, I wonder if this is backlash, it cost allot of people ALLOT of money.

cold be I don't know, right now they seem to be saying that its just a system disruption but with no further details.

So it could be a malfunction or a hack, don't know yet.

I hope everyone on the planet logs in and checks their balance and charges, when the system is fully restored. All systems are connected.

7 years at retail when I was a bit younger, I think I had to use those things all of twice. Depending on the area I’d be surprised if some people even knew what they were.

Working in information security, nine times out of ten it literally is shoddy configuration. You'd be amazed at the lack of redundancy in critical systems these days. Now that does open the door for an attack, but the vast majority of issues I've seen in my career are caused by either that bad deployment, or someone deciding that yes the middle of a business day is a good time to deploy something to production...

Currently in UK and working with this issue -

This is affecting only European Visa transactions for customers who have not yet switched to the global authorization platform.

It appears to be dying down now - the impact that is happy days and always keep some cash at home ...just a little

Has to be a problem with the authorization process not the nightly batch.
The retail systems use ultra reliable handshake authorization schemes with redundant hardware for reliability.
