NFL vs ABC

The NFL has people that want to kneel for the national anthem, which offended some people. While ABC had Rosanne, who told a joke on twitter that offended some people.

Keeping in mind, only the government can technically have 1st amendment issues. If one argues that corporations can act as government proxies, and the 1st amendment bleeds into that. I think is one could make that argument. On the flip side, if you want to argue that: people just whine when they are told to shut up, i think one could make that argument also

Do you think both situations are Freedom of Speech issues? Do you support the NFL but not ABC, ABC not the NFL, neither, or both? It's kind of interesting reading the arguments for and against.

There is a distinction between the two. Roseanne did it on her own time via twitter. The NFL players while on the job.

Im disappointed that Roseanne is cancelled. I enjoyed it, and it was one of 2 shows my entire family would get together for. That is now gone.

But in the grand scheme of things I could care less. Its their product, they can run it how they want.

I support both ABC and the NFL.

When you do or say things that reflect negatively on your employer, there should be consequences.


Imagine if you went on Facebook/Twitter/whatever and started talking derogatory things about your fellow employees/management.... you wouldn't have a job anymore after someone pointed out what you were saying/doing.


Like the saying goes.... your rights end where another's begins.

The NFL players and network actors are nothing more than employees.
Those employees have contracts.
Those contracts have code of conduct policies.

They can be fired, fined and or suspended for violating those policies.

Absolutely nothing to do with freedom of speech.

The sad part is that by Roseann running her racist mouth, it hurt the rest of the cast and crew of the show.

The advertisers bailed the second they heard about the tweet. Without ads, no reason to continue.

In Jacksonville, Flori-DUH they froze hiring at both the school house and the fire house because the Jaguars™ NEEDED a new $1.2 Billion with a B for the folks who are AT THE GAME!! Their attention span is so shot, they need to be amused the avg. of 37 seconds between snaps...

Sure has the freedom of speech to say what she said. Meaning she will not be arrested for it. But like everybody says, freedom of speech is not freedom of consequences. I don't get how it was a joke though? That lady that said stuff about Sara Sanders, now those were jokes... I don't do twitter, so maybe there were some other tweets leading up to this? or did it just come out of the blue?

As far as the NFL? Personally kneeling does not bother me... I think there was video of some guy sitting on his ass stretching... that bugged me.

But both are also kind of a work issue. She represents or at least is working for a company. Same as the Players. Not sure the NFL can enact this rule without the unions ok though.

True but contracts might prohibit it? I am no expert but have read some pro athletes are not allowed to do crazy scary stuff like ride motorcycles and bungee jump on their own time.

They will probably pay her contract out

It's not a 1st Amendment issue but it is a free speech issue.

Unless Rosie had something in her contract, then she could pretty much say whatever she wants.

She never said it on the show, so who cares what she said.

Football players were doing what they were doing DURING the show. Which caused people to stop watching.


Personally? I could care less what football players do off the field, same as I could care less what some actress tweets when she's not entertaining me.

It's why I can enjoy movies with even the most obnoxious leftist asshole actors and actresses. Because I only pay them to entertain me. If they entertain me? Then I will watch them.


Once they stop entertaining me? I stop watching.

@RickinVa - that's the rub, what's negative? Voting for Trump, is that negative? Giving money to the NRA, is that negative? Having cops come into a store? Voting for anyone who's a socialist? comparing any american politician to Hitler. When you use a total opinion word like "negative" to justify something, don't you think that's an issue?

@Bluntone22- part of me agrees with you, but again, if you have big corporations deciding what can or cannot be said, what can or can not be joked about, or what can or cannot be protested, is there really freedom of speech then?

@nwtrucker - I agree with you. if you are off the job, i do't care what you say. The NFL can say when you play this is what you do, just like ABC can tell any show what not to say.

Companies are not bound to give their workers the right of freedom of speech. I could require my workers not to talk about religion on the job or fire them if they were constantly using profanity in public on the job. I could even get rid of them if they got caught robbing people, I would not want to jeopardize the customers by having them work at their house.

Employers have rights too. If they didn't, not many people would create a company to put others to work.

Employers just cannot try to make an employee vote for a certain candidate they choose to support, but an employee can lie to them and still vote a different way just to satisfy an employer like that.

Freedom of speech does not protect us with anything other than government, a person can be arrested protesting the house of a candidate if they go on private property. A business is also private property usually, a business owner can kick protestors off their property but not public property. Roads and sidewalks are fine.

Most big businesses have clauses with high paid people to stay neutral and not degrade the business reputation, like the NFL and the company that hired Roseanne.

The NFL is a job, I know I can not protest whilst on the clock...

If I own a tv company and you work for me, don’t say racist s**t in a public forum [twitter, for example]
Or I will fire you...

It’s my right as a business owner to not have idiots represent my company...

I’m a conservative btw...
Anyhow, back to the point:
If u say stupid crap (which is roseannes constitutional right) then I will exercise my constitutional right to fire her...

If the government decided to throw her in jail then the issue would be “constitutional”...
Otherwise it’s a simple common sense issue...

Abc is free to cancel any show they like, for any reason. Just as the NFL is free to make their players stand, or let them kneel anytime they wish. Both things will come with consequences. ABC may loose viewers, or be looking stupid if another network picks up the show and does really well with it. And we have already seen what the NFL decided due to fans leaving the sport. They decided the fans might be the ones to listen to, not the millionaire players.

Freedom of speech is exactly that, but it is NOT freedom from repercussions of said speech.

I can call the big guy a pinhead right to his face. I have that right. And he might pummel me for doing such. Repercussions. Don't push the big red button until you know what happens next. (IMHO)

there are so many actors out there that are on network tv and they have podcasts where they say some #ing crazy #. i love it. the networks who hold the rights to their shows dont say #.

That was only one person - Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Seems he had a penchant for riding a motorcycle without a helmet . And one time , it didnt turnout too well for Big Ben...
Didnt have anything at all to do with Constitutional freedoms. The Steelers were trying to protect a player.
