WASHINGTON — A lawsuit accusing President Trump of violating the Constitution by refusing to divorce himself from his businesses cleared a critical hurdle Wednesday when a federal judge in Maryland refused the Justice Department’s plea to dismiss it.

In a 47-page opinion, Judge Peter J. Messitte rejected the federal government’s claims that the plaintiffs had not shown that they had suffered injuries that a court could address.

The suit, filed by Washington, D.C., and the State of Maryland, accuses Mr. Trump of violating constitutional anticorruption clauses intended to limit his receipt of government-bestowed benefits, or emoluments. The local jurisdictions claim that in hopes of currying presidential favor, government officials are patronizing Trump-owned properties instead of hotels or convention centers that the District of Columbia or Maryland own or have some financial interest in.

This is only one of many 'corruption' cases pending against #45. Draining the swamp, eh.

Frankly, I rather keep #45 then risk the christian taliban VP.

Foreign heads of state and state officials have stayed in and held events at the hotel frequently since Trump took office. Maine Governor Paul LePage stayed at the property last year just before the president included a national monument that LePage had opposed in a review of national parks. A public relations firm also spent $270,000 on behalf of the Saudi government at the hotel, as the country was fighting to roll back a law allowing the families of September 11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia for any alleged involvement in the attacks.

Trump gave up running the hotel when he became president last year, but he still owns and can withdraw funds from his business at any time.

Sounds a bit like bribery to me. Not even clever bribery.

A weak but smart Red Herring. Have Democrats sat down to plan how to WIN yet? Too busy for that I suppose.

He hasn't divorced from his businesses by the mere fact that he uses taxpayer money to fund his own resorts on his weekend trips to them. Anyone who thinks Trump isn't enriching himself and his business by being in office is kidding themselves.

no one cares everyone has become immune to attacks on Trump even if something is real I still don't care

Wait, where is it saying that he is funding it with taxpayer cash?

It looks like the area hotels are mad because everyone wants to stay there.

What is his connection to the hotels now?

Trump has always had gang of lawyers making decisions like this, it's kinda the first thing you do to get and stay wealthy.

I don't suspect he is going to slip up, or intentionally overlook the fact he is going to need to be separate from running a biz as soon as he is elected.

It's just some paperwork flipping it to someone else. Probably back to him after presidency, like all the politicians do.

It's rich guy 101 I am sure.

This sounds like another scam lawsuit.

Lemme guess democratic judge? I bet is was

Naw I would say the end began about 9 years ago when we suddenly were not allowed to be critical of the president without being labeled racist.

That started the spiral of relentless open attacks on the other side.

eta: and when actual evidence is provided then I and I am certain many other people hoping trump does well will condemn him, so far its a bunch of accusations and opinion with squat in the way of actionable evidence.

Indeed! That's one reason why CNN and MSNBC audiences continue to dwindle. Rosanne's public admonishment of Jimmy Kimmel resonated with a heck of a lot of sane Democrats the other night.

to be fair, the "criticisms" of the president were that he was a muslim socialist kenyan who wanted to take away everyones guns and destroy america because he hated it so much.

then there were the legit criticisms, like his tan suit.

I disliked him because he reminded me of a butter bar in the military, indecisive no plan no direction just trying to do what people like.
Whenever I criticized his lack of leadership I would be attacked on a regular basis getting told I only dont like him because he is black.
I would have taken a purple dinosaur as president if he would just lead, when the president delegates everything to congress with no attempt at leadership you get back room deals and no transparency. Which usually means we the people take it in the keester with no lube. *cough* ACA * cough*

I really have difficultly understanding this blind reverence to a person that acts in complete opposition to everything that 'his supporters' say are the reasons they voted for him.

Blind adherence to a 'leader'/'guru' regardless of their behavior meets the definition of a Cult.

Being 'shunned' and cast out if you don't march in lock-step is also a sign of a Cult.

I recommend listening to real conservatives on the subject:

The merits of the case, what do you think? The optics are bad. Cesars wife and all that....

LMAO! Wow. Talk about reaching.

You think that is something. Just wait til they take President Trump to court to sue him because he won the Presidency. I hear they will put Putin on the stand.

The suit, filed by Washington, D.C., and the State of Maryland

Guess who's money is being use for all these frivolous law suits? Yep. I think it is time to sue the Government for fraud, waste, and abuse of tax payer's money.

Not blind reverence. We can just see the stupidity of the one's that oppose him. Come on man. They literally tried to put a curse on him! lol.

You mean like Podesta and his spirit cooking? There is no cult. I would actually wager that most of Trump's supporters don't like Trump's personally. They do like what he is trying to do for America though.

The merits of the case, what do you think? The optics are bad. Cesars wife and all that....

Merits? None. Just trying to attack Trump because they hate the fact that he won the Presidency. That is all.

And he had ties to all of the criticisms you mentioned. What did he do that was great for America and it's citizens? Go ahead. I will wait.

Translation: "He's exactly like all those other rich scumbags we hate!"

Trump's next campaign slogan should be "Making you love what you claim to hate."
