The Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an unarmed woman last July was charged Tuesday with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter eight months after the case sparked protests, international outrage and the firing of the city’s police chief.


Charging this police officer with murder is the first, small step towards healing for this woman's family. I hope he is found guilty and sentenced to the maximum penalty allowed.

In Minnesota, it looks like the maximum sentence for 3rd-degree murder is 25 years. Sentences for 2nd-degree manslaughter seem to be less.
