Wow video of police in upstate New York trying to run over a raccoon has surfaced and its nothing short of disturbing.

Police say they received several calls about "What appeared to be" a rabid raccoon in a parking lot.

So of course the only way to get rid of a rabid raccoon is run over it repeatedly with your car and your SUV and another car.

Apparently it took 20 minutes for them to actually kill it. Police are saying they followed protocol go figure..

wo videos taken outside an Upstate New York grocery store show police officers attempting to run down a raccoon with their vehicle, and some area residents are outraged by it.

The incident happened Tuesday outside the Stop N Shop in Ravena in Albany County. Facebook user Bryanna Catucci captured the scene in a pair of videos that she uploaded to Facebook with the caption, "Leaving the grocery store to find 2 cops charging at a raccoon in a car for 15 minutes until dead. You would think if it had rabies they would shoot him instead of torturing."

what else were they supposed to do?
gunfire clearly would have been useless against it

I would think in that 20 minutes that they could have contacted professional animal control folks and not went to such extremes. Sure it was (allegedly) rabid and perhaps a danger to the pedestrians there but I take issue with people who enjoy the suffering of other living things.
Dumb question but could they not have tasered it and then killed it?

This is some good footage. I Don’t know about y’all, but in my head, the Benny Hill music was playing.

If they had shot it, in that parking lot, someone else would have complained about a stray bullet. I guess they could have put a net on him, or beat it with a garden hose. Maybe mace it.

Anyways. Those little buggers look cute but they can jump about about face hieght.

Now that i think about it, shooting it would cause a lot of blood spray. Potentially infecting the entire block.

Ususally squashing them with your car is pretty clean and blood free..

"The Raccoon Menace" is the working title to the next Star Wars movie.

That's nothing.

I lived in Arlington Ma. and someone hit a coon in the parking lot.

Poor thing was half dead but they called the cops. I just got home from work and saw it. Poor thing was in bad shape.

The idiots got a shovel and put it under my living room window. (ground floor apt)

Cop came and pulled his service weapon and put 6 bullets into it.

WTF!?!!

I yelled at the idiot after 3 shots.

It was loud!

ETA; sounded like a .357 or .44 not a .22 or a .38.

I see no issues with this. Like it was pointed out above, the police couldn't have shot it since a stray bullet could have been worse for anyone hit by it, the blood spray going airborne could have been worse, and in the end someone would have cried foul about the police shooting the diseased critter.

If anyone has a better idea as to how to handle the situation, I'd like to hear it, since I have to deal with these varmints yearly. Sometimes rabid, sometime not. I don't know until they're dead and checked out by a quailed Vet.

May or may not have been rabid and there's only one way to find out which means the racoon is no longer alive. Not surprised really, lotta smaller towns don't have animal control/ leave it up to authorities and some who aren't trained for specific animal cases. Hopefully they didn't destroy the brain tissue specimens in that process, maybe thy were worried a .22 wouldn't work quite as well as a car, but nonetheless, HBC isn't exactly humane.
