Everything sucks, review

I saw a trailer a few days ago for a show on Netflix called "Everything sucks"
Nothing special about the trailer except that it takes place in a highschool during the mid 90s.
I figured at least it would have great music.
I was mostly right there.

Teen romance and good tunes sounded like a great Saturday night of television with my family.
Well as it turns out the story was not so much a teen romance one but more about a young girl coming to terms that she's a lesbian. I'm sure in the mid 90s that was a much harder thing to deal with than today.
The story was predictable in many ways with few surprises and a few "really?" Moments.
I'll pass on the spoilers so you can see for yourself.

We watched all ten episodes last night and that includes my 15 year old daughter so that's saying something.

One think that impressed me with this show was the female lead. She is a lovely young lady in my opinion and I think we may see a lot more of her in the future. Her name is Peyton Kennedy.

I watched it last week, its a good show, and yes it was much harder to come out in the 90's when I did. That was back when Don't ask Don't tell was implemented, and the AIDS epidemic was still killing 1000s of people ever month. Until the cocktail came out.

It was also a very scary time to be a young gay man. Allot of people I knew were dying. It was sad. Being young, I did not have to watch as many people die, as the gay men 10 years older than me, but I saw enough die. I lived in the Chicago area and there is a magazine there Gay Chicago, it was a whats happening in the gay areas of Chicago mag. There were PAGES of obituaries of gay men, every single week for years.

The reason I bring AIDS up, is it was a stigmatism in the gay community, and the main character of the show is gay.

too bad they have to put gay and lesbian crap in everything anymore. several tv shows i had to stop watching because of that crap. and you are gonna sit down let your kid watch it? what the heck is wrong with you teaching your child this crap is ok.

It is a very real part of life. So what is the problem with portraying what is real? You don't have to watch it. Its a good show, and it portrays what kids went through....Its was not as easy in the 90's to come out. We paved the way really, starting in the 60's(before my time) for the generation today.

There is nothing wrong with being gay.

The problem is the majority of people are not.

So why pander to a very small demographic?

When it comes to film and television.

Create content for the market.

So when your kid or grandkid comes out what are you going to do?

And I would be ashamed of my kid if she treated a gay person as defective.

I can agree with most of your post.
Making shows that have every diversity box checked is probably not going to end well.
Just check out the new star wars movie.

But that doesn't mean no diversity boxes should be checked either.

My daughter says that there are several "furries" at her school complete with tales.....

I saw a show on Netflix called "Queer Eye," and decided not to watch it because I know I wouldn't enjoy it.

So difficult to do.

Not so much of a problem with any other network.

Netflix just recycles the same snip over and over again with far too limited content.

Anymore every network tv show and movie is a retread of older shows.
Original content tends to flop.

I wanted to watch this show. I made it half way through the first episode. It was OK. Just really boring. I'd rather just watch something that actually came out in the 90s.

I'm a 53 year old straight White male, raised in the South and I could care less if someone is Gay, Black, etc, etc I don't hold it against them.
I do however, care if you're an asshole.

I started this thread to say that I enjoyed a show when I'm actually pretty picky about what I watch.
I don't care for forced agendas or political propaganda in my media.
To many times a show will do things to push a point instead of pushing a good story.
This show was nothing more than a story about a confused young lady and the people around her.
No agenda, no spankings, only several people trying to find their place in the world.
Not only her but the parents and friends around her are figuring things out to.

If people don't like the subject matter then don't bother watching.

That being said, I too raise a middle finger on your daughters behalf.

Lol, you are the only one on this thread deciding if they will or won't watch a show because of what sexual orientation the characters happen to be. You represent identity politics at its dumbest. I'd hate to be with you when you're trying to decide where to shop or eat since "gay and lesbian crap" is working at stores and restaurants and standing in line with you.

This is what happens when you grow old without ever growing up.

while not on the level of a great show my wife and i watched them all in a day or so and i really enjoyed it.
i am with you on the lead girl. the lesbian. she is doing a very good job.

im not gay and i enjoyed this show even with the lead being a lesbian girl.
why cant you enjoy it?
