What if we discard the star count display in the avatar and keep them using for highlighting posts / expressing same opinion / give credit?

I mean, It may be a single observation I made and I can be wrong of course but I got this impression lately:

Over the years, it seems the overall star count does not reflect good posters anymore in it´s essence. The political madness that overtook ATS some time ago clearly reflects that. Not only there, so often, (probably unintentional) disinformation is posted by a higher star count member and people just take it for granted and do not even validate it.

Made that mistake, too on the reader side of things.

I don´t want to yank any high-star-count-members chains, just an idea. If it´s good or bad, please post! And stay civil.

I'll give you a star if I can for just thinking about it... I hope a flag will suffice.

I kind of use the star-thing to let people know that I read their post...like a check box.

Peace

didn't it all get messed up awhile ago and some members ended up with gazillions of stars? anyway i'm not really swayed one way or the other by them.

Be honest, it´s because of the Semmelbrösel recipe I gave you. It´s basically butter ^^

Any member with 0 or " " stars that signed up before the star system was introduced will get a bazillion stars if you want to give him one.

I noticed because long time ago I gave an old member a star for the post (had " " stars..) and on the next page he got a wagon load of them, that´s how I noticed (and also told SO).

It never reflected good posters, only popular posters.

Here I've been doing it wrong. I take drinks of wine. 3000 calories plus a day lately. Too many posts, you know.

In all honesty, I do not contribute as much to ATS as I used to but I am always reading. And I have found that I do not look at stars, flags or others scores. I usually don't even notice usernames any more...

Only thing that influences my opinion is a user's avatar. Take Armap's avatar for instance, a thread can be filled with comments, when I see that little Southpark guy I read that first.

I know it is totally ignorant and I should read all sides but that's just how it works for me.

Peace

I've had the same avatar since day 1. I even got a bit mad when a change happened once where I had to change it's size. B&W pic, easy to overlook etc. It's amazing how many people focus on avatars tho. What a weird thing.

Yeah I know your avatar very well and you are also one of those members that when I read your comment in a thread I think to myself :"Okay, he got this one, no need for my comment".

I guess that's the whole thing, after some time on ATS you find people that resonate with your own line of thought and you associate it with their avatar. (It becomes very noticeable when two different members have the same avatar)...

Peace

Stars, yeah some people lucked out but if they are free how valuable are they?

Still, wish I had 3 mil stars. lol.
