Crows and ravens do hold long, long grudges and will attack if they've ever been mistreated or feel threatened. They've been shown to have incredible
facial recognition of human individuals and can pick someone out. My guess is that perhaps the older gentleman might have shooed them away from the
garbage a time or two and they decided to take matters into their own claws.
It's also possible that they've learned from experience that if they time it right, they can use the attack to prompt the human to drop the trashcan
lid and give them access to the tasty garbage inside, heh.
I think we've really only just scratched the surface of knowing just how intelligent some animals truly are. Humans have long looked down on the
animal kingdom as 'dumb.'
