Crows and ravens do hold long, long grudges and will attack if they've ever been mistreated or feel threatened. They've been shown to have incredible facial recognition of human individuals and can pick someone out. My guess is that perhaps the older gentleman might have shooed them away from the garbage a time or two and they decided to take matters into their own claws.

It's also possible that they've learned from experience that if they time it right, they can use the attack to prompt the human to drop the trashcan lid and give them access to the tasty garbage inside, heh.

I think we've really only just scratched the surface of knowing just how intelligent some animals truly are. Humans have long looked down on the animal kingdom as 'dumb.'

I would go to this guy.

Love Harvey Birdman..
But Charlie from “Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is awesome...
Not to mention he’s illiterate yet is the worlds foremost authority on “bird law”

I live in the country and watch animals all day.

Crows/Ravens are spooky smart critters. Hard to believe they are birds.

On one of them home video shows, there was a guy paragliding and was taken down by an eagle caught in his lines.

They were way up there too. He had a cam on his helmet.

They both went down in the trees but were ok.

He was pissed. Russian dude IIRC.
