The former president and his wife had there portraits unveiled at the national portrait gallery in Washington today.

This is a normal tradition, nothing new there although as you would expect, both portraits where painted by black artists.
That fits right in with the Obama's being the first African descendents in the white house, so that would be a perfect fit.

The presidents portrait captured him rather well, although I don't care for the background but that's a matter of taste.

Michelle's on the other hand....
Well let's say it looks like crap....
It's awful.
Who approved that nasty painting?

www.npr.org...

Apparently the audience even gasped at the unveiling. Can't say it's a surprise, Ugg.

What say you?

The one of Michelle doesn't even look like her (in my humble opinion).

Obama's does look pretty spot on, I just don't get why he appears to be seated outside with leaves and plant matter all over. Is that part of the environmentalism angle, or... ?

Heinous, yes.
But keep to on topic.

It kind of looks like he is half-hiding in the bushes to me...

Almost as if he has been seen, and he is trying to play it off like "I'm just sitting here in the woods, nothing to see"

I gotta agree, that background is just weird.
But at least it looks like him.

I must admit that I thought someone was joking about the cartoonish styling. The artist does seem to like creating chaotic backgrounds, but it does seem like Obama's chair is stuck in a bush and not even on the ground. Though I did laugh at the exaggerated size of his hands! Michele's appears like it was rushed, but was done by a different artist.

Both paintings certainly will stand out in the gallery against the backdrop of all the other previous presidential portraits. It is always a matter of personal perspective and taste. For me, it doesn't look very presidential. To chaotic and no strong foundation, but perhaps that is the memory we are to be left with?

Article does say it’s typical of the artist, and I’ve definitely seen stranger at the art museum in Philadelphia.

Meh, honestly.

I thought Michelle's picture was okay, but Obama's portrait looks feminine.

Like I said in the Q thread: it looks like Andy Warhol came back from the dead to paint their portraits.

Michelle's is really odd. Its like the artist solely wanted to focus on the dress.

Obama's looks like him but such a strange setting. I actually like the foliage, but it doesn't really work for a background of a portrait for a former POTUS....he also looks very uncomfortable almost pensive....

No FamCore, that is more like an expression of the artists particular style. According to the article, the artist who did Mr Obama's portrait is known for putting subjects in amongst crazily colourful, bold backgrounds.

In my opinion the Michelle painting is tasteful and quite nice.
The Barack painting belongs in the Museum of Bad Art. It is gaudy and ostentatious.
