'Bleeding is the No. 1 cause of traumatic deaths. If we can get the bleeding stopped, we can stop the deaths.'

Do you know what to do if a family member, friend, or even someone nearby is suddenly suffering from massive blood loss?

A shooting, a heavy equipment accident, an accident in the garage with the table-saw at your neighbor's garage, an auto-accident?

This is a handy article on this, and I certainly believe education is the way to spread awareness as well as even an understanding of what to do to help others in chaotic situations where seconds and minutes count.

King, Gulick and Wright illustrated that point with bright red tees with bold white writing that read: “This shirt could save a life.”

Brown said people could use shirts, scarves or any piece of clothing available to pack wounds to control bleeding.

And don’t be timid about it, he said.

Source Article

There are many easy to use, and inexpensive "professional" tourniquets to be found online, and certainly a lot of good youtube videos on how to apply them, and also reviews on them.

Definitely, make sure and get a good quality one, too. Cheap ones aren't all they are cracked up to be and can pose additional problems.

Even if you don't have a tourniquet, you can use a shirt or your belt. Whatever you can get your hands on to STOP the bleeding. Any more we're not even worrying about if it's a sterile cloth, as long as the bleeding is stopped the rest can be fixed.

You can't fix dead, but you can help prevent it by keeping the magic red liquid inside the person, as much as possible.

there is a root used in Chinese medicine known as San Qi, or Tian ji. Latin is: radix noto ginseng (not a ginseng ).

powdered, this root will stop bleeding on contact by quadrupling the fibrogen output of the red corpuscle.

I keep a bunch powdered in our 1st aid kits.

That is handy to know, and certainly could be handy in a bad situation.

Thanks for the info!

You must have a fear of mass shooting, because if you die of blood loss, mathematically, it won't because of a mass shooting.

nationaltraumainstitute.net...

Trauma is the #1 cause of death for Americans between 1 and 46 years old.

After a traumatic injury, hemorrhage is responsible for over 35% of pre-hospital deaths and over 40% of deaths within the first 24 hours,[1] second only to the rates of death due to severe central nervous system injury. A cascade of life-threatening medical problems can begin with severe hemorrhage, and many of these occur simultaneously:

This is a good idea, but if you are doing it because of mass shootings, one is a little on the paranoid side.

Feminine products come in very handy also. Tampons for bullet wounds, pads for direct pressure to deep cuts. They're as close to sterile as you're going to get in an emergency and They Work. Arterial pressure points can be used to slow the blood loss and give wounds time to clot. If that doesn't work, use a tourniquet. I'd rather lose an arm or leg than bleed to death.

Because phones always have signal, are easy to find, and dial when your heart is racing full of adrenalin.

Because a person can bleed to death in 3 minutes, you have time to explain that to the dispatcher and them to relay directions effectively for you to understand.

Yes, you should get professionals rolling, but in an a mass-incident, emergency crews are slow and inundated. You may have to act before they can get to you to help. A little bit of knowledge can go a long way at saving one more person.

your welcome, I used to make a blend in "un-petroleum" jelly for a boxing corner man in Chicage back in the 90s...truly amazing.

We also grow, harvest (while flowering) Yarrow fower and leaf (achillea millefolium) for a similar effect...not as potent as a styptic( but still very good) however being full of salicylates its great for pain as well.

Oh for the sake of all that is logical.

A mass shooting is the easiest example, most relatable scenario. Certainly doesn't imply a fear of such a thing.

I listed a couple scenarios in the OP, seems you've fixated. Please try not to derail the thread further.

From the OP article:

“Bleeding is the No. 1 cause of traumatic deaths,” Gulick said. “If we can get the bleeding stopped, we can stop the deaths.”

I actually just bought a GSW/trauma kit for EDC, especially when I go to the range.

The contents list is:

1 Dressing, Gauze, Sterile, 2" x 2", Pkg/2; 1 Dressing, Gauze, Sterile, 4" x 4", Pkg/2; 1 Conforming Gauze, 3"; BLEEDING- 1 Trauma Pad, 5" x 9"; 1 Gloves, Nitrile (Pair), Hand Wipe; 1 QuikClot Sport 25g; DUCT TAPE-1 Duct Tape, 2" x 26"; FRACTURE/SPRAIN-1 Bandage, Triangular; WOUND CARE- 4 After Cuts & Scrapes Anesthetic/Antispectic wipe, Tourniquet Quick Release, Nasopharyngeal Airway (28 Fr., 9.3mm) with lubricant, 7 1/4 trauma shears, Israeli Bandage 6 inch

That is a nice kit you got there, Excallibacca, especially for that price.

Much like a firearm, a kit is better to have and not need, then need and not have.

Sent you a PM.

Fear of being shot is pushed hard in the MSM. They really push the idea that there's a criminal with a gun around every corner, and one coming into your bedroom tonight, too.

Can't tell if they're doing it to sell more guns or to keep trying to ban them... but either way its working.

A little bit of knowledge can go a long way at saving one more person.

A "little bit of knowledge" can do more harm than good.

But okay, have a by stander call 911 while you tie a tourniquet around somebody's neck to stop bleeding from the mouth, nose and eyes.

If you aren't smart enough to get 911 on the horn to advise first, good luck to the person you treat with that 'little bit of knowledge'.

Derp, if they don't answer, hand the phone to somebody else.

What if theres nobody there? What if its the end of the world and EMP has knocked out all electronic devices? What if aliens are invading, gang members, terrorists, cannibal zombies and bombs are landing all around?

Derpty-doo, doo.

Whomever that is bleeding out, isn't going to make it.

While I see the point in this, I also find it ironic that the response to mass shootings is stopping bleeding versus trying to reduce mass shootings through smarter gun/buy legislation.

Treating the symptom rather than the cause, which is silly, when people are so adamant about "But mah guns!"

But yes, basic first-response skills, like CPR and general first aid, is something more people should know.

I've read of samurai carrying a bag of rice flour to staunch bleeding.
Pack the wound full of flour and wrap it tightly in a bandage.
I'll try and remember to carry a bag of rice flour and a good length of bandaging cloth the next time I go into sword battle.
Tourniquets are a last resort. There is the risk of losing a limb that has been tourniquetted.
Rubber surgical hose has saved a few from bleeding out.

Direct pressure, then you can listen to 911, or attempt to dress the wound, or apply a tourniquet as needed.

eta: if you do not have a first aid kit handy, your shirt can be used some form of bandage is a better option even if its a sweaty shirt than nothin.
